FLAME OUT
Okay people. My latest problem is with the wind & the gas water heater. We use both the electric & gas together whenever we take showers.
We have a Monty 3455SA which means the water heater access door sits between the two (2) slideouts. There's a lot of wind here the past couple of days & whenever we use the gas option of the water heater the wind blows out the flame, relights, etc. This causes the propane alarm to go off because of the buildup of gas. I'm fine with the alarm going off, that is not my problem
My question is has anyone had this problem. What can I do to block the wind & not have the flame keep going out.

Several of us had the same problem at the "Q" this year. I parked the truck next to the rig near the water heater to block the wind. Electric was not an option while boon docking. Worked just fine. I don't think is a good idea to block the vents on the Monte. When plugged in, I rarely use the gas to heat the water, normally just electric.

When we have electric we use the electric side only and always have enough hot water, sometimes too hot. You might want to adjust the thermostat on yours.

AFAIK, there is no adjustment you can make to the Suburban Water Heater thermostats. Both the electric and gas ones are at a fixed temperature. They do make a couple of models with different temperature values that you can order.
If the electric is not heating the water enough it may be failing. There was a rash of crappy electric thermostats in 2011-2012.

The advantage to using both propane and electric is it cuts the hot water recovery time since there are two heat sources. As Carl alluded to, I don't think it will get the water any hotter. There are times we have to use both, but that is because of a multitude of women-folk taking too long showers (keep that quiet please!!).I also don't see any problem with blocking the wind as long as the vents remain open. Have anything that can lay against the rig and not block the vents (folding table, etc.)?

That's strange. Ours has a lever on the side to set the temperature. I have it turned up a little more than half way.

My 2011's propane side of the hot water heater is very sensitive to wind as well. Must be something the vendor has changed as I never had near the issue with either of my previous Montana's. Parking a vehicle upwind adequately away from the exhaust is my only proposed cure.

what we did on a previous camper was to go to a metal shop or even a plumber that does tin work. have him bend up a 3 sided piece that you can attach to the grill when parked. the top and bottom are still open and it won't get a direct wind hit. maybe this would help

Do you have a picture? I have never seen an adjustable thermostat and I would love to have one.
