Seattle to San Francisco

I'm looking to build an itinerary for a costal trip from Seattle to San Francisco via Highway 101 and 1 in late spring. I welcome any suggestions for "must sees" and whether or not to drive the costal highway the entire distance. We have about a week and a half to make the trip. Thanks in advance...

You can drive the 101. Be more careful with the 1. Do not drive the 1 south of Monterey to Hearst Castle. UNLESS you are very short rig. Then, maybe. SHORT rig! Most Montanas are not short enough.

We just finished that route, from San Fran north to almost the Oregon/Washington border. We stayed 3 or 4 nights, moved up the coast.

There are pull offs and view points, but, they are hard to get into with the rig in tow. So, we would scout out the pulloffs on the way north, find the campground, and the next several days go back with just the truck and sightsee. That way we could hike, sit and stare at the water, watch for seals and whales and look at flowers and eat leisurely lunches.

Truth is, for Carol, 3 or 4 nights at each stop was never enough. I think we spent over 4 weeks from San Fran to Oregon/Washington line. Twice that would have been better!

I will blog about this in detail, LOTS of detail and lots of photos, over the next 6 months. Currently my blog posts are almost 2.5 months behind the actual visits. Having too much fun to keep up!

And....we have done this 2 times. And I subscribe to both blogs.

I said that to say that there is sooooo much to see that catches "your" eyes, that even John and Carol have seen the same and different things as we have

So in making your plans be willing to be spontaneous and you will see things differently than we have. (I say that so we have an excuse to return to that area again!)

Enjoy your travels!

Heading south allows for pulling off into view sites much easier than north bound. We did the Portland to Disneyland last March down 101 to SF, east to I 5 for remainder of the trip South. Then spent a week in Woodlake, CA, then over to Pismo Beach, then back to PDX up I5. No problems encountered at all.

Onekla, I would suggest staying a night or 2 at the Port of Newport, OR rv park. The park is located at the marina. All full hookup. Recommend sites 27 - 34. The are backin but back up to the boat basin and newport bay bridge. Great view We have been here for 3 nights, last nite tonight then back home and have really enjoyed our time here. . Newport has some great venues for things to do

The Oregon coast is the most beautiful in the world - especially the northern two-thirds. Any of the Oregon state parks along the coast are lovely - we really enjoy hiking along the Sixes River (be sure to go at low tide), Manzanita is a lovely little town, as well as Cannon Beach (go hungry, lots to eat!)

Have fun!!!!

I would not tow Hwy 1 between Leggett & Fort Bragg & take 101 to Willits instead.
