This sounds like what happened to me just a couple of months ago. I could hear the clicking but it would not light. I was finally able to get the repair guy out and he determined that it was a problem with the gas valve if I remember correctly. The conversion went something like this.
"Yep, looks like a bad valve control. Good thing I have one in the truck"
"That is good because I have been without hot water for 2 months"
At this point he gives me an odd look and says..."Why didn't you just switch to electric"
To which I answered, "I didn't know it ran on electric. How do you do that?"
He pointed at the UNMARKED switch and then removed the cotter pin and switched it on.
At that point I meekly walked back into the 5'er and hid until he stopped laughing.

Newflylady, it is always a great pleasure to see someone who can poke fun at themselves. I hope someday Vicki and I have the pleasure of meeting you.

Tom, I will be able to do this tomorrow and will repost my findings. I sure appreciate all the help.
ole dude, I don't see any kind of strainer but thanks for your input.
I did check the burner tube and no obstructions.
Looking more and more like the valve, but will hopefully find out for sure tomorrow.....
I did call a mobile RV Tech and wanted to give him a model and serial number of the heater and asked him to bring out a new valve. He ssid he had to check it first before ordering parts. I told him to forget it, I wasn't paying for two service calls. He could always return the valve if it is not the culprit. I will probably have to replace it when I get to Bar Harbor next week.....

I had similar problem, and the tech at the local RV sales/repair company diagnosed trouble to the gas valve. He replaced the valve, and I've not had trouble since. I asked if this was common, and he said no, except that ours was the second in a week that he had to replace. The other was in a SOB, but still same model water heater.
Best wishes.

UPDATE: After checking everything I could, I finally decided to call a Tech to replace the gas valve, Yep, that's what it was. As soon as he replaced it, it fired right up. I watched carefully so next time I will buy the valve and replace it myself. (Hopefully, I won't need to)
Thanks to everyone for the great advice.......This has been a great learning experience for me, and as always I owe it to the MOC (however you want to pronounce it)!!!!!!
