2016 3950BR Leaks

Just a heads up for those with a new Montana. Check your caulking! It rained when I was bringing my New 3950BR home last month, I noticed water in the pass through storage area once I arrived at home. I found it was coming in around the hatches. There was not enough caulking around the hatch. I re-caulked it, and no more leaks. Fast forward to this week, we had wind and rain, and I noticed a piece of paper on the bedroom dresser was damp. Checked the outside speaker which is above the area, and found no caulking whatsoever. I have caulked it, and believe the problem is fixed. Other than that, all has been perfect with the new unit.

gosland, its a beautiful unit!
Hopefully you won't have other issues. It's been my experience that 90% (made up number) of all new campers have a few issues. DW and I pick up our new 2016 3000 Montana in a couple of weeks.. ish. It's ready but DW is an accountant and this time of year its hard for her to get off work. I'll take a look at some of the caulk during our PDI.

Question.. did you have the second awning added to yours? Factory or dealer?

Neal - I like statistics (even made up ones). Like, government studies show that 3 out of 4 people make up 75% of the population. I purchased it at RV Outlet in Danville, VA, and that's how it came. It also has slide covers (little awnings) from the factory on each slide out, so I guess I have 6 awnings to maintain, but I feel the slide awnings will help keep the elements off of the slides, and also help keep the FL sun from beating down directly on the slides, which will hopefully keep it cooler.

gosland - LOL, I love that statistic! That sounds exactly like something the government would do. It's a small world, RV outlet is where we are buying ours too, this is our first Montana. Kelly is our Salesman. I've not purchased one from them before and they're about a 7.5 hour drive for me, I live in Nashville TN. But the price they gave me was so much better then my local dealers I had to do it. They also gave me the highest trade in allowance of any of the dealers we shopped at and they also don't charge any fees, so the net net was too good to pass up.

They didn't have a 2016 3000 with all the options we wanted on the lot so we had them order it. I tend to buy new campers, but every time I find a silly problem like no caulk I tell my camping buddies that I ought to buy used ones that somebody else already iron out all the problems.. but then I'd be complaining about all the bad things the last owner did - LOL.. so I buy what I like and just know that the trials and tribulations are all part of the experience. Hopefully we won't have any serious issues, but even those can be fixed, they just hurt a little more.

We've been camping for several years now and we never seem to tire of it, we love it as much now as when we started.

gosland, I will be picking up our 3950br in a week or so. Please keep up on your posts so I have more ideas on what to keep a eye out for on this floor plan. From all the other posts I have a good idea some of the common problems are. Does your door to the bonus room swing in or out? It looks like the early ones swung in and I have read that with the bed out the door would only open about a foot. The floor plan now shows it swinging out.

Greg - the door swings out. The bathroom door is a "pivot" door, which does save space, but I haven't quit figured out how to adjust it so it does not stick. Maybe if I get by a dealer somewhere I will see if they can try.

Neal - I drove 9 hours from Ft Walton Beach, FL to pick it up. As with you, the price and ease of buying trough them was unbeatable.

Actually, I'll bet that percentage isn't far off. Considering all the different systems and good/bad days for installers, any new unit is bound to have something not right - as long as it's something minor like some missing caulk, that's not terrible. Think of how many new homes have something or another wrong when they're first put on the market. We've the same sort of systems, only smaller, and even with an extremely thorough walk through, there's bound to be a nit or two show up a few days down the road.

I live less than a 100 miles from Danville. I didn't know RV Land existed. They seen to have a nice following. Why are you buying from them?

We had some minor things when we picked up our 3950 and the dealer was great to get them taken care of. Just completed a 4500 mile trip with ours and glad to report no problems. Just shook out some saw dust and other construction debris.

Yep we kept getting water next to our bed on our old 2012 and it took a while to find out where the leak was coming from turned out to be a little missing caulking on the bottom trim of the bedroom slide it does not take much that is for sure

Are the air/heat vents into the guest-room/office/man-cave? I saw that was a complaint early on, but since a couple of you have the 3950, I thought I'd ask here.

Thanks

Yes, it does have vents in the office. Have had the unit for 1 year, and traveled 8,000 miles with it. A few small issues such as shower handle breaking and a bad light switch, both fixed under warranty. One larger issue of when it rains AND the A/C is running getting water in the air return on the main A/C unit. Keystone had the dealer put PVC pipes in the air return to keep it from collapsing. I have not had a chance to test it yet. Was told that if the return vents cant return enough air, it will get the air from somewhere, such as sucking it in under seal or from any water that has not drained from the shroud. Made sense to me. I have also replaced the tires. I did not have any problems with the original Trailer Kings during the 8k miles, but noticed a slight "hump" in the center-line of one tire. Purchased new Sailun's, and the Trailer King distributor gave me a pro-rated check for the bad tire.

Thanks. The one on the lot has the Sailuns. I was going to put my 614's on it, but from what I'm hearing, there are no issues with the Sailun 637, even though it is ST.

So, I dropped the hammer and picked it up. Haven't used it yet, but it towed very nicely. Can you give me more details on the PVC in the return vent? I'd like to go ahead and do that before my FL trip in March.

Thanks

Since this was a fix suggested by Keystone, you may not need it as they may have found a way to keep the vent from collapsing. If you pull the return vent covers off (inside the camper) and feel in the vent, you will notice it is not much space, and subject to collapse. the dealer ran a couple of pvc pipes in the vent (the length of the vent from the vent cover to the a/c unit). I have not tested this yet, so the jury is still out.

Gosland. Check out the good discussion by bowlesj here: http://www.montanaowners.com/forums/...16&whichpage=2

I had the same set of AC problems and think I have it corrected now.
