AC won't start
I just got a new Yamaha EF2800I and the EMSLCH50 will not let it start the compressor. It starts making a terrible noise and when I shut off the AC the noise stops and the noise is coming from the EMS. The generator is rated for 30AMP and it is not set on Econo mode when I try to start the generator. What little information I have on the EMS says there are two different settings for AC starting. Will have to look that up but does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks, Mike

I believe the two settings on the EMS for AC starting have to do with the delay after a power shut-down by the EMS before the compressor kicks in. I can only add that our 30 amp generator would not run the 15,000 btu AC in our previous rig but it would start the 13,500 btu one. You can add a hard-start capacitor which will lower the needed start-up amperage and allow the generator to hopefully run the AC (after looking at your model year, your air conditioner may well be equipped with one already). The other thing to try is to start the fan first, wait a few seconds then try to start the air conditioner itself, this has worked for us in the past. One other thing to try is to turn off every breaker in the rig other than the Air Conditioner breaker, if this allows the air conditioner to start, you can then turn other breakers back on. The converter/charger itself usually draws over 10 amps if it is on. Keep in mind that if the thermostat caused the air conditioner to recycle, you will be back at square one. You can bypass the EMS (there should be an external switch to do this to see if that helps, but I do not think the EMS is the problem. Keep us informed!

I would bet you have to bypass the EMS system. It's probably upset because it shows an open ground, or something like that (Jim Fischer would know why for sure). I know I can't use my Honda's with my EMS.

If it showed the open ground, then the EMS would not allow power at all to the rig and nothing would work. It sounds like there is not enough amperage to run everything that is drawing load. Disconnecting the other loads will at least let it be known if the generator is supplying enough amperage to start the compressor.

Although it may have a 30 amp plug ... actually your genset is rated at 20 amps with a maximum of 23 amps ... the A/C will pull 18-20 during startup. If you have anything else on including your fridge or converter ... you're probably pulling over 25 amps. I'd venture you'll have to have everything else off to start your A/C.

Well guess that it just does not have enough juice. Tried shutting everything off and still didn't work. Called Progressive and the tech said that it is a voltage problem. At 104 volts it causes the contactor chatter. Seems like it should just open and stay open. Will see what the Yamaha man says.

Sounds correct on the Progressive side, Air conditioner is trying to pull the start-up amperage it needs which will result in the voltage drop. Wattage=Voltage*Amperage
