$50.00 Maximum????????

Just fueled up the GMC. Priced was 2.96 a gallon. With a $50 maximum just how many gallons at 2.96 can you get into a 26 gallon tank before using up the 50 bucks?? 16.89 gallons. I wasn't close to full when the pump cut me off at 50 bucks. At first I thought there was an error and tried to reinsert the card, twice and rejected twice. Now I thought my card was maxed out. No way says Lorraine. Come to find that the "station operator" set a 50 dollar max for all credit card users. Now my card has a max credit line that is considerably more than 50 bucks. Just where does the "station operator" get the gaul to shut me down at 50 bucks?????

And the way fuel prices are going up and up it won't be long before we'll only be gettin 10 gallons for that 50 bucks and forget it if you have a 100 gallon auxiliary tank.

BTW-That "Station Operator" was the infamous Wal*Mart.

Murphy Oil. May be a subsidiary but I don't think so. I think they contract for the spot.

Glenn,
I have found a few stations around here are doing the same thing. I usually try to hit the Flying J's and larger truck stops as they have not followed this crazy policy of $50 max per day. On the few stations that I know do this, I just pump first and then go in and pay with the credit card.

We have seen that many times. Most places were $75.00 We were told that it was for our protection in case your credit card has been stolen. Some places we just put the card back in and it starts all over again. STUPID.

ARCO stations do the same, $72.50 limit (where did they get this amount) and the charge the user an aditional 40 cents for each transaction, then they will charge you another 40 cents for another transaction. but they will let you get a cash advance off your card (ATM) for $200.00 from the gedonk stand and pay them cash. Great big rip off by the station owners at ARCO. I just received my Shell CC the other day, and I have been with them sence 1988 never a late payment ever I have a CC limit of $750.00 I asked for an increese to $2000.00, and was only given an increese of $1050.00, can you believe that? I might just get rid of all my gas cards and let my bank CC get the proffet insted of the oil companies there are making a huge proffet already at the pump not counting what they make from the card.

Well Helen all I have to say to that "for our protection" is BULL. Once our credit card is stolen and reported we are only responsible for the first 50 dollars. The credit card company assumes any further loses. That applies to all our cards, Visa, MC and Discover and no we have no special insurance for this coverage.

I also tried to reinsert the card and was rejected each time. When I get back down to WallyWorld I will attempt to speak to the store manager as speaking to the attendant would be like speaking to the wall.

I ran into the same thing on our visit home to the States. There was a $75 limit. I just reinserted the card and pumped in more. I like Montana Sky's solution. Pump it full and pay inside with a credit card. Then smile broadly at the attendent.

No self-serve here in Oregon, so when the pump shuts off at $75 or $100 then you have to wait for them to come back and reinsert the card for you. They have been doing that here for several years. We have a 40-gallon tank in our truck and it costs over $100 to fill it and going up daily.

WE RAN INTO THIS AT A FEW STATIONS ALSO,, MY FIX - When the first kicked off - I got the receipt and inserted a different card. I have two that give 5 % back on fuel - Grocery's and Pharmacy products. I have a usaa card coming that another MOC member posted a few days ago that will give 10% back on all fuel purchases I can't wait to get that one!!!!! Looks like you just have to PLAY THE GAME.

We have run into the $75.00 limit but haven't had a problem re-inserting card and pump more. I agree what a royal pain but like Montana Sky's solution also. The bigger truck stops seem to be the best bet with out the limits, at least so far.

Safe travels - see ya at the rally.

I've run into a few stations with the $50 or $75 limit. All I had to do was shut off the pump, get my receipt, insert the card and then finish fueling. It is frustrating and it seems a bit ridiculous given today's fuel prices. One of these is a brand new station right here in Independence. So it's not just older pumps.

In more than 50 years of driving autos and pickups, I have had this to happen exactly TWO times, both on our most recent trip to Colorado pulling our Montana. In Amarillo, Texas the pump shut off exactly and completely at $75. I just drove on to Clayton, NM and finished filling up. Then in Buena Vista, Colorado the exact same thing happened: shut off at $75.00. Could be that I just never ran up to that amount many times before, but these are the only times it's ever happened to me

75 dollars would not be bad for me as my TV only holds 26 gallons. At 3 bucks a gallon I could fill up with room to spare. Now when the prices start getting to 4 bucks, and they will, the problem re-emerges.
It would not be such a problem if I could have reinserted the card and continued but it wouldn't allow that. These pump operators better take another look at their so called "protecting us policy" and instead start protecting themselves for return customers.

We use Wal-Mart's reloadable Shopping Card whenever possible for the .03/gal discount - we load it up with a credit card that also gives a discount so we are "double dipping". It's not much but every penney counts these days.

This is just a thought.... The credit card companies are on the hook for many fraudulent purchases. I wonder if they offer a smaller bite out of the purchase to retailers willing to limit the maximum purchase per transaction. I have no clue but it does make some sense to me.

David, you have been fortunate. I've run into the $50 limit quite a few times. Like Glenn, though, the $75 limit doesn't catch me as often since our tank is 29 gallons.

Just had this happen 2 wks ago. Attenant apologized, said owner was planning on raising the limit, but hadn't yet, and told me to re-insert my debt card I was using. I did. No problems and I finished filling my almost empty 34 gal tank on my 2500 ext cab, LB.
