Tires again

I know this has been talked about many times before on the forum but I am a real rookie when it comes to tires. I presently have ST 23580R16 - GyMarathon on my '08 3400RL. I would like to upgrade to a better quality tire. I was checking the old topics in regards to tires and notice that some are talking about 23585 and G rated.
Coud someone please inlighten me. What is the difference between 80 or 85.

The difference between 80 and 85 is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch in height per tire. It lets you go to LT tires too. They are built better tires than ST's.
The G tires are rated much higher than LT or ST tires but they run at higher than 80psi so you need to look at the inside of your wheel to see if it is rated to take the higher pressure.
I switched to BFG Commercial TA's, an LT tire rated less than the Marathon ST's but they are doing much better than ST's did.
I'm sure the experts will chime in too.

Here is a copy of the post concerning wheel rating if you need it:

(An e-mail copy from Treadit)
If you would be so kind as to email me your address I can send you a letter and stickers for you to affix to the backside of your wheels indicating the re-rated weight and tire pressure.
Thank you and have a great day

I upgraded my 15" wheels to 16" and put BFG Commercial TA's on. We then took a long trip to your beautiful Maritimes (NB, NS and PEI) and besides the peace of mind that came from having decent tires (which I only checked infrequently for air) the tires still looked like they were brand new when we got home. I installed LT 245/75/R16's on my 31RLD TT. LT 265's would give you even more load carrying capacity (3415# per tire at 80# of air) and they measure 31.4" in diameter.

Your existing tires measure 30.7" per tire so going to 265's would only decrease your between tire spacing by about 1 1/2". You would have check for height to be sure your have enough clearance.

I too have the 2008 3400RL, and recently switched to Goodyear G614's 235/85/16. IMO I would not go to a LT 235/85/16 E rated tire, most are rated at 3042 lbs @ 80 psi. Your OEM tires should be rated around 3500 per tire ,mine were 3520 @ 80 psi. The Michelin Ribs, the commercial TA's and a several more are great tires ,but do not have the weight rating for the 3400RL, by using such tire you going down in rating not up. The G614 is rated 3750 @ 110 psi. Hopefully your rims are rated to 110 psi, on some there is a sticker on the inside stating the psi or the TR6 stamped on the inside. As far as going to a larger tire such as a 245 or 265 I would also have a concern about the width of the rims. Yours should be 16 x 6 .IMO the G614 is the only choice in our weight range, or going to the 17.5 tire ,and wheel. Hopefully this helps. good luck on your choice

Hey Andy,

As I told you before, I got my advice from Lonnie and he advised to go with Bridgestone Duravis 500. I did and I'm happy. They are LT tires rated for 70mph.

Think about it 4 x 3042=12168 Your maximum allowable weight is about 15,600 and I'll bet you are way under that. Weigh it to be sure. 20% of 15,600 = 3120 15,600-3120 = 12480. Unless you are at the max, you don't need more capacity and the ST's are rated at 65.

My 3400 weighs 14,050 and my pin weight is 2,350 so I have 11,700 on my tires. I will bet your numbers are similar. IMHO the G14 is overkill on the weight but "underkill" on the speed rating and overkill on the weight may mean poor ride.

Let us know if you pass our way

If you want to stay with an ST tire, I believe the only ones Lonnie recommends are Maxxis. The ST235/80R-16E is rated at 3420lbs at 80PSI.

Thank you all for the replies. This will help me in my decision making. I will have to check out my rim specs before I proceed to finalize.

David I now remember you mentioning this but forgot. Will drop you an e-mail later this weekend. I have just finalized my retirement. It has been delayed by 2 months until March 1, 2011. They gave me an offer I could not resist.

You math is correct David but it does nor work that way. When weighed by RVSEF at the rallies they weigh each wheel. The 3400 for example will be heavier on the side with the galley, Fridge, etc.
you can still stay under the weight limits on each wheel with proper loading. When weighed the first time we were over on one side.

I think some are forgetting as Rich has pointed out, first not all the tires have the same weight on them. Having 11700 on your tires with a max rating of 12168 IMO is cutting it to close. 117 lbs per tire under the weight rating , and hoping all the tires have equal weight, which they won't, you are most likely to be over on your weight rating. Yes you can weigh each tire, then load accordingly. IMO I want to load without worry, not so I can stay under on tires that are borderline on weight rating. IMO I want tires that exceed my GVWR, which is 15500 minus the pin around 2500 leaves 13K . LT tires rated at 3042 do not meet that requirement.

As far as ride goes on the G614's IMO my fifth wheel rides better less sway, just seems more stable then when I had on ST tires. and as far as overkill IMO thats hard to do on these heavy fifth wheels . At present without weighing each tire, I am 750 per tire under the weight rating, so if one tire is heavier than the other I am less then 750, but no where near max rating. Many have gone to G614 on the heavier fifth wheels. Again IMO a 15500 GVWR fifth wheel, a 3042 E rated LT tire is going backwards on weight rating . Again good luck on your choice.

I agree with this logic and is the reason I chose the Goodyear G614s

I was weighed at the rally in 09 and all four wheels were within 50 pounds of each other so in my case, yes it does work. YMMD
