Inspecting Montana in PA-what a hassle

Not sure of other states but Pennsylvania you need to have your trailer inspected once a year.Don`t want to go back to my selling dealer for lots of reasons.Called 4 other dealers in my area. They all said"bring it back to where you bought it"How nice of them. One dealer did say they would inspect it,but I would have to drop it off and would be a 4 week wait.OO brother. The dealer that did my warrenty work is from delaware and they don`t do PA inspections. Not really asking any questions here just venting.

You sure are having more than your share of problems for the past few months, maybe time to change your name. Or better yet just go camping with your newly fixed Montana. I have never heard of a annual inspection of Travel trailers, dont the State do it? Nothing like that here in Wisconsin just 15 bucks for plates.

$15.00 for plates?? Oh, be still my heart! We now have a permanent plate, pay one time. BUT, YOWSER, do they get cha for that one time. I am not sure cause Al buys the plates, but I think it was over $300.00. Even before the permanent plates we paid a lot more than $15.00. However, we don't have yearly inspections to deal with.

Cruzin 2,

The one time plate is just that, the first time you purchase a plate from the Secretary of State you pay that. Then you keep that plate and never pay again UNTIL you buy a new RV. This is only for trailers, NOT our cars or tow vehicles. The cars and tow vehicles they still get us once a year, but not quite so much, relatively speaking. Groan!

We also pay sales tax when we purchase a vehicle or trailer. We do NOT pay personal property tax or value tax on our vehicles or RVs, or any other tax on it again. My dad used to pay HUGE personal property taxes on his vehiciles when he lived in South Carolina, every year he paid that tax, over and over.

palebluedot,

YIKES!!! Would you mind if I say, NO THANK YOU! However, if your home property taxes (on your stickbuilt and land) are like the are in SC and TX, very LOW, we would win this sad war. Our property taxes on the stick built and land are more, I think, and I can almost guarantee they are if you get into one of the major metro areas, like around Detroit, those counties really pay huge property taxes. One reason we wanted to live where we are is that the property taxes went WAYYYY down as soon as we crossed the county line into Lenawee. Likewise our car insurance rates went down. Not so for the RV insurance rates tho, they figure you can tote it anywhere, so they set a flat fee for Michigan (now let me state, that was with the company we used to insure the RV with, we dropped them and went shopping, saved some $$,and I do NOT know the thinking at the new company.)

Wasn't there some saying about only 2 things for sure in life, pay the taxes and die??? SIGH

OH Michigan has a 6 % sales tax, but not on food you buy in the grocery store.

I make no representation that I have ALL these facts correct, but this is my understanding, and as we all know, I have made my share of wrong statements, and misunderstandings.

In New York(the land of taxes and fees) we pay $150/yr to register and $15/yr to have it inspected, the plate is a one time fee unless they issue new plates.

Carol, here in the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area of Tennessee we're paying 9.5% sales tax, 8.5% on food. I understand there is no income taxes here but they're smart enough to make it up on sales tax we tourists are paying.

Steve,

I hear ya! I believe the sales tax in Texas is 8% too, someone will correct me if I am wrong.

When I go to Ft. Wayne Indiana and stay in a motel (research trip, just us gals), there is a pretty hefty room tax, I want to say it is 12%. Again, could be wrong! But, that is what I remember.

Seems we are gonna pay one way or tother!

Here in NY, though, the nice thing is they pro rate the annual fee, ex $150 for the year, however, when mine expires on 12/31, I dont renew it until april or may, when I start using the RV, by then, it is about $100, at least I save a little. Also, the inspection is not manditory.

Since no other Californian has popped in here let me just say, stay where you are. We pay very high vehicle registration fees EVERY year, 5th wheels included. Trucks also pay a weight fee.

Isher,
There is NO difference in TAXES & FEES. If a dollar leaves your pocket and goes to the government it is a TAX!! LOL

I was misinformed, just checked the DMV website, the inspection is manditory in NY every year, however, not required to renew your registration, now does that make sense or what.

Nebraska is the "Tax me" state. we have to pay sales tax on a new vehicle and then every year property taxes and liscense fees. cost about $80 for RV liscense and taxes and about $600 for the new pickup--we even have a wheel tax here in Omaha that we pay on vehicles. $54 is for pickups and for cars it is 34--now you tell me what the difference is--they both have 4 wheels. and the sales tax is 6% in Nebraska and another 1.5 % in Omaha--that is what hurts on big purchases. we don't have sales tax on food. I can't believe they don't take the rv's more, guess there aren't enough of them yet-- Property taxes on houses--well that is a different story--very high you can figure on about 1500 for every 100,000 it is worth here in Omaha--they are less in the smaller towns.

Except that I went to "D" truck plates (8001lbs to 12000lbs) GVWR. Those run me about $180/year. The Monty attached pushes my truck up over the 8000lbs limit of the common "B" truck plate. More than likely no one would ever ask me to drive up onto a scale, but if they did I would rather be within my plate rating. There was some talk I found by guys in PA, especially the horse trailer people, about the PA staties being... well... not nice

Well it is now my turn to make you sick....In Ontario we pay $65.00 for a lifetime plate. No annual inspection required or any other annual fee. The plate is transferred from one trailer to the next for a minimal fee.

Depending on the weight of your trailer, the places you have gone may not be licensed to inspect a heavier unit. When we first bought our monty we had to take it to a truck inspection garage. Since then our dealer got a license to inspect heavier trailers. Call around to truck repair/inspection garages I bet they will help you out! We are in PA and yes once a year inspection. They check brakes, lights, tire wear, etc. I don't mind at all - would rather be safe.

jpkelpe,

$1,500 0n value of $100,000 sounds ok to me. My son paid $5,500 on value of $250,000. That was five years ago and I know it is higher now. Personally we don't know how he affords it!
