Any restrictions on spares?

Just replaced my Marathon tires with 4 Goodyear G 614 on my 2013 Montana. Paid about $1400 after the $70 rebate and was told that I could probably use my 235 80r16 Marathon for a short period in case of a blowout. I'm really not interested in paying another $350 for a new spare if I don't need to. Any thoughts about the safety of mixing tires in an emergency?

I kept my Marathon spare. At close to $400 per tire, I don't see the sanity of buying 5 G614's, one just to hang underneath the trailer, only to be used in the event of an emergency. I reason that even a Marathon can work for the very short term until I can get the other tire repaired or replaced.

We also kept the OEM spare. If/when we replace tires, will rotate one to spare status and toss the OEM.

We keep the OEM spare when we went to G614s. But we did put a TPMS sensor on it so we will know it's ready if we have to use it to get us to a tire repair place.

Kept my OEM Mission for a spare when I put Michelins on. Figured it would at least get me to the next town. Never touched the ground in 7 years. Replaced it this year when I "found" a newer Yokohama tire of nearly the same size and rating.

I think it's silly to hang a G-614 under a trailer as a spare. But others may differ. A brand new marathon is a fine spare, considering many, many people roll marathons for many thousands of miles and do just fine. I kept mine, it's still brand new, and I still have total faith in it as a spare.

The 2 things I made this decision based on, is number one: It has never been used, hopefully never will be used, and if it is used, it will only be on for as long as needed to get the flat G-614 repaired or replaced at the earliest opportunity.
Number two: Having a slightly different sized tire on a non-drive axle is NOT an issue (I worked in the tire industry for quite a while.) for spare use. Left on for long distances, they could possibly wear at different rates, but this would never be an issue if used as a spare. The two tires are independent of each other and totally free to spin at their own rate based on their own circumference.
Tread differences also mean nothing.

Let's remember that on a recent thread the poster found his, never on the road, Marathon spare had a bulge in it. If you don't put a 614 under there I'd at least put something you could have a little more faith in. If you travel out west you still might have to run a long way on a very hot roadway.

When I changed mine out to the G-614's I replaced all 5 tires. The G-614 is a little taller tire and having to different size tires on the same axle is not a good thing. Even the tire guy pointed it out to me also and said the same thing.

It is not an issue for spare use. Not at all. The two tires are free to spin at their own rate, respective of their circumference, independent of the opposite tire on the axle. If left on for long distances (read "full-time") there might be differences in wear rates, as theoretically, one is turning faster than the other. More RPMs mean more rubber lost per mile. Simple as that. In reality, the differences we are discussing here are very marginal to wear potential.

you could always go with the G rated sailun tires that people are looking at too. but, I'd just used my E rated tire as a spare and save a few dollars.
