Florida City, FL Recommendations?

Looking for recommendations in the Florida City, FL area. Just to say we went there will drive to Key West without the Monty as the CG prices in the Keys are nuts.Even with today's diesel prices I figure it will be cheaper to camp on the mainland and drive over for the day. Thanks

Larry and Penney RV State Park 305 232 1049 Listed as Miami
Southern Comfort RV Fla. City 888-477-6909
Fla Keys RV Key Largo 305-451-6090

I believe you may be driving longer than you think, if you have never made this trip. It is 130 miles from Fla City to Key West but most of it is 35 and 45 miles per hour and stop start through towns.
Enjoy the trip it is a beautiful drive.

Thanks Wayne. I realize it will be awhile driving at those speeds, but then I'll get to see the scenery which is hard to do at 65.

We spent one night at the Florida City RV Park, about $27/night. The park is not rated very high and I understand after being there a night. If you are not afraid to camp on a Walmart lot, then you could probably take this park. There may be a park in Homestead.

I must agree with the previous post about the drive time. I think it will take 2.5 to 3 hours each way if you don't stop for anything but traffic. We came to a dead stop almost every time we got out. There is a lot of construction going on and most of it is one lane each way. Also, you don't get to see alot from the road while you are on the keys due to businesses, houses and trees.

We drove from Florida City to Marathon on Grassey Key. We stayed four nights (2/19 to 2/23) at the Jolly Roger, about $33.45 with the Passport America 1/2 price rate (well worth it). Four nights was the most they would honor the 1/2 price rate for or we would have stayed longer. Nice area and only about 1.5 hours from Key West. We also took a day trip from Key West the National Park at Dry Tortugas. High dollar, but a nice trip to see an 1850s pork barrel project.

There are several State Parks in the Keys. We went to Baha Hondo, which has some nice beach and John Penekamp(?sp) which is under construction and wish we had not bothered with.

Good luck and enjoy the journey.

To bring ya'll up to date. Over on RV.net I asked same question and one respondant mentioned Jolly Roger RV Resort in Marathon on Grassey Key that is Passport America and good for 5 nights even this time of year. WE now have a reservation there for 3/29 to 4/3. Will make visiting the Keys a little better on the diesel cost. PA cost is $33.45 per night. My 5 yr membership for PA will now be paid for with money left over.

Here it is April Fool's Day and this is no joke so will bring you ya'll up to date on our Key's trip. We are staying at the Jolly Roger on Grassey Key in Marathon. Sure glad we did despite the fact that the PA sites are next to the hwy and the traffic is noisy and heavier than we expected. Goes on 24/7, but at only $33 a night we'll put up with it for 5 days. The drive times in the Keys are about 50% longer than I expected so am glad we didn't stay on the mainland. US 1 is under construction on the mainland and is stop and go and slow. If you come to the Keys consider staying at Jolly Roger. Is on the water so you can see a sunset in the gulf.
