More failures

Ready for this. The galley tank that failed here on our Florida lot and was replaced in June of 2014 has failed again yesterday. Galley water pouring out of the underbelly. Black tank has sprung a leak at the top I think and hope. That makes 4 tank failures on this 2013 3402 Big Sky that is 32 months old. It has been on our lot in Florida since October 21 ,2104 just holding water and dumping every 3 days or so. E mails off to the dealer that installed the previous failed tanks and to Keystone today. Received replies back quickly and we hope for a resolution. Of course we live in the Montana here during the winter and it took 8 weeks to repair and replace the previous failed tanks. Lost our summer travel trip last season and this summers travel looks bleak. We have really had enough. Will follow up with results.

Rich,
Why don't you just leave the galley tank open when sitting, I have always done that and even leave gray open unless I need it for flushing hose after black tank dump. I will close it for a day to store water for flushing hose is all. Granted you are in the rig a lot more than us, but we have never had a tank failure. Just a thought.

Richard, if it wasn't for bad luck, you wouldn't have any luck at all

Rich, we boondock a lot and travel with full tanks until we find a place to dump. If anybody should have a problem it should be someone like me and not someone that stays parked for months like you. Mine does not even have the support straps that they recommend.

Bingo We do leave the gray and galley valve open most of the time only closing it occasionally to clean after dumping the black tank. Made no difference in the 5 tank failures in our 06 3400 and now 4 failures in this 13 3402. We have had many problems with both our Montana's . We do spend a lot of time in them and do put a lot of miles on them but is that not what they are for???

Yes Rich that is exactly why we buy these rigs, is to use them. I am at a total loss to explain how one couple could possibly have so many tank problems no matter how and when you dump them!!! Surely by now you have used up all your bad luck.

You've gotta be kidding me, again! At what point do you simply fold and move on? I know with every fix there's hope that that's the last time but...

I call that really bad luck. One tank leak in 13 years of Montana ownership and was able to repair myself.

We are at that point David. Looking at lots here in this RV resort. We love RV'ing and have been at it for over 30 Years tents, pop ups and 6 RV's but we are now always looking over our shoulder at what might fail next. We do have a plan and if it does not work we are done. As we have said many times if I thought there was better brand in the price range we would have it. I also do not believe that we have a unusual number of problems just that we report all problems. However 9 failed holding tanks in two Rv's in eight years is pushing the law of averages. I don't get it but it is fact.

Major failures in this 2013 3402 Big Sky. Failed fridge, Failed hot water tank, 4 failed holding tanks. The rest of our many problems most categorize as "Minimal' Such as Wall fascia falling off, Pendent light falling off ceiling, Pedestal on table falling apart shelves collapsing in Ardmore due to wall panels pulling out, OEM valve stems defective. Then the really minor things like improperly labeled tv and satellite connections. Front entrance door not fitting properly. Screens falling out of the windows ,propane regulator defective, all lug nuts rusting. Curtain brackets pulling out of wall. Screws falling out of the fenders, Hardware falling apart on some drawers. Side compartment door arms pulled away from the door on two doors. You know little things but for some reason I don't think they should happen on the best you can buy, top of the line 2013 3402 Montana Big Sky. Maybe we are too picky.

I disagree Rich, you don't have an unusual number of problems, you have an exceptional number of problems. I don't know what you can do about it, but in my opinion you guys have the strength of Job and have suffered enough. I just wish there was someway we could help.

Rich, it sounds like you got all our bad luck. I've been at it for 30 years and aside from a number of blown tires and one leaky tank , that I fixed, I have had very few problems. And we put a lot of miles on our rig.
Hope your luck turns around.

Hi Rich

Your list is small compared to the one I had by the time my trailer was 6 months old.

Then when Keystone refused to repair same under warranty I just bit the bullet and spent the money to have the trailer repaired by a competent shop.

We now have 80,000 miles on the trailer and are beginning to see things that I would consider normal for the mileage.

If Keystone was really concerned about the consumer the dealer I purchased would not be a dealer today. Instead they are still a Keystone dealer and still have a totally incompetent service team and I still find people in the local RV parks with new units delivered by this dealer that are unusable.

However your waste tank problem seems to exceed the norm. Have you taken any pictures of the failed tanks and their installation? There has to be something different about your installation that is causing the problem.

I assumed Rich your Florida stay would be "repair" free this year. Those issues would drive me nuts. We also have looked at permanent property in SW Florida in preparation for the day we decide not to haul the Montana down here. Even though we are several years out, numerous issues like you are having would probably move our time line up.

I agree that both of My Montana's have had a "exceptional" failure rate. I use this forum as proof that no one has had the problems we experienced and they are all documented. I hope that Keystone will recognize that our failure rate is not normal and is the exception to their excellent record building a high quality unit.

Rich - it sounds like you got a build on a bad day. This is our 4th Montana, and we sure haven't seen any problems like yours - most issues were microwaves, one broken spring hangar clip, and lots of bent axles.
I posted about a month ago that I thought I had a black tank leak (never had a tank leak on 7 RVs). Dropped the belly yesterday and discovered a leak in the galley tank. These tanks have a flanged top, probably epoxied to the bottom part of the tank, and I believe it is leaking at a flange point on the driver side next to the frame, so can't see it.
Where was the leak in yours, and how did you fix it?
Anybody else have this problem?

My first galley tank leak on this 13 3402 was a split on the very bottom and we had it replaced, I believe the present leak is at the very top as we can fill it almost full before it spills out.

I hope Keystone will recognize that this was exception to the rule of a quality build as evidenced by post on this forum.

As I posted earlier on my galley tank leak, the seam between the top lid of the tank and the bottom portion failed...at the seam...over about a length of 8-12 inches. I dropped my tank and bonded the seam ALL the way around. I also had a crack in the bottom of the tank about 1 inch long, as near as I could tell, that was almost directly under where the grey water enters the tank. Thanks to Ozz, I ordered the repair kit and am confident that I won't have another leak in this tank. I also installed an Iseries tank monitor system that utilizes external sensors, so I know exactly what is in all my tanks. John
