Upgrading kitchen faucet

I want to replace the faucet in my kitchen island. I was able to disconnect the water and sprayer lines with no problem but I cannot get my sink wrench up on the big nut that holds the faucet in place. There does not seem to be space for it to get around the nut due to the closeness of the cabinet and the sink.

Is there a trick to do this or do I need to completely remove the sink to gain access?

They make a special wrench for this application. Probably available at Home Depot or Lowes. Need to find a sales rep (probably not an easy task) with some plumbing knowledge!

Thanks Steve, I have the wrench you mentioned. The problem is that there is not enough space to get it on the nut that holds the faucet in place. It's only about 2" between the sink and the cabinet frame.

Well then, my next go to would be a vise grip with another pair of pliers to turn the vise grip. After that, I'd be into trying to make a tool. They probably put on before mounting the countertop.

Yep It is a bummer i just used some channelock pliers at a semi vertical angle to hold on to the nut underneath and I reached up and turned and wiggled the faucet till it broke loose then turned it by hand

Did you try to take the faucet apart from the top? If you already have a new faucet, then one could always do the brute force thing and cut it off at the top and allow it to drop out the bottom...that's if you can't take it apart from the top side. And if there is enough room from the bottom to get a dremel with cut-off wheel up there...one could but the nut on one side and allow it to separate from the faucet. John

Like John, I cut the nut with an oscillating tool. Installed the new one by holding the nut underneath with channel locks while neighbor turned the fixture from the top. Jim

I'll try the channel locks to hold and see if I can loosen it from the top. Good idea.

Faucets come off the same way, male or female. There should be a nut on the back side of the faucet. A faucet wrench has a long shaft with a swivel spring loaded head that has a t handle. The wrench head will adjust for a large range of sizes.

Then there are the faucets that have a steel plate and a couple screws on the underside instead of the big nut that needs a faucet wrench. Or if lucky, a big pair of water pump pliers if you have cupboard doors on the back side of the counter



Another 'gotcha' is that some like the new faucet in ours that needed an adapter to attach the trailer water lines to the new faucet lines. Both Lowe's and Home Depot have those adapters.

Sorry but we installed many a faucet head then set the counter top. Kinda what happens when kitchen design people don’t ask installer what works.

If your 3400rl has the same counter top as my 3402rl then you will have plenty of room to use a faucet (also called a basin) wrench to remove the large nut from under the counter top on both the riser and the valve. Loosen the nuts with the wrench and completely remove the nuts by hand. Turn off your water supply and disconnect the lines and you are ready to remove the parts. If you don't have a basin wrench and are going to trash the faucet, disconnect the lines and use a pair of channel lock pliers to turn the base of the fixtures counter clockwise to loosen the nuts under the cabinet.
