Adding fans for refrigerator

Hi again folks. I have added an inside the fridge fan that connects to the fins. I like that one a lot. Seems to help a bit to even out the temps in various parts of the fridge.

My fridge is in a slide so the bottom and top vents are both on the slide. As it was built there are two fans in that compartment, one near the bottom pointing up and one near the top pointing up (rather than out).

I bought a small but very powerful 110v fan (240 cfm). I placed it in top compartment pointing straight out with the vent cover not on. I wanted to see if I put a powerful fan up there pointing out, would it help the fridge cool faster and better.

I tried with the fridge running on A/C and with it running on propane.

The fan, which to the touch seemed to be expelling tons of hot air, didn't seem to make much different inside the fridge.

I started all this because even with the fridge on the coldest setting and testing during evening hours when the temps are high 60's to low 70's (Las Vegas) I could not seem to get the fridge colder than about 45f. and the freezer not colder than 15f.

It puzzles me that the fan would not be making any difference.

Any help understanding this or any suggestions on other small modifications I could make to help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob - Air must absolutely positively flow through the outside upper fins and then out the upper vent. Lower Fans must be positioned to help blow air up through the fins. Upper fans must be positioned to help pull air through the outside fins first then force it out through the upper vent. Your top fan needs to be above those outside fins if possible.

There should also be a wall/baffle acting like a chimney flue routing the air through those outside fins. This wall/baffle should be about an inch in front of the fins (toward the outside of RV) and no more than an inch or two up past the bottom of fins.

My frig did not have the baffle built-in at the factory and the large void over the whole top of the frig was left as a giant heat trap. I filled the void with insulation and placed a baffle as per the installation instructions. Solved the non-cooling problem.

I added a couple of links below for you to read through about cooling your fridge. I suggest you consider an arp unit and add the suggested fans, they will help. Also be very patient with the fridge and make sure you are giving time to cool between door openings, it take a long time for the fridge to recover. Use a remote thermometer for monitoring temperature so you don’t have to open the door. I find that it stays a lot cooler when I keep more food in it.
