I noticed the blank blocks for adds. They are gone now. I just thought they were felicitating for adds. A pop up blocker will stop most block ups. IE has a good one in the latest update. Some times it gets in the way. When we read the home town paper have to turn it off to see enlarged highway camera photos. The ones that show all that snow and rain. It tells you it is blocking and you can chose weather or not to view it.

These ads were not pop ups but were the banner type ads placed at the top of each page.
They load as part of the page not as a pop up so therefore PopUp Stoppers have no effect on them
