Please help with prices
Hi,
I'm in the process of trying to buy a 2003 318BHS. It's new, sitting on the lot for a couple of years. They are asking $26165.00 before tax and licence. They say that is their invoice price. Does this sound real? Is it a good deal? Any suggestions?
We are new to trailers and want to be fair but not scammed.

Value is like beauty. It is in the eye of the beholder. One way you might get an inkling of the worth of this unit is to look up its used value on the NADA book for RV's. My reasoning is based on the contention that that is precisely what the unit is worth the moment you drive it off the lot.
I might also check to see what the bank considers the rig's loan value to be. You can adjust these prices upward a bit to reflect that it is an unused unit(not new).

Good luck Michael and Amy on your negotiation. If you belong to a credit union, they will be happy to look up the value for you. Another way is to go to a Borders Books or other book store and look up a Kelly Blue Book or NADA book. Stiles' right in that an '03 is just about two and a half years old already. I did a search and saw a four year old used 318 advertised for $33k. You might want to see what others have paid on the forum.

We paid $28K with almost every option on ours (did not get the stand-alone dinette) and the dealer gave us all but about $500 back on the pop-up we bought from them and traded back in. The cheapest I have seen anyone say they paid was around $22K.
As for a 4 year old one for $33K...2003 was the first year for the 318 so not sure how someone is selling a 4 year old one. It was so new it wasn't in the 2003 brochure.

26165 may well be their invoiced price but that was 2 1/2 years ago. For whatever reason they have been stuck with a rig for 2 1/2 years and it is costing them money. The longer they hang on to it the more it costs them. For that reason alone I am sure they don't want to carry it over another winter.
My suggestion is "LOW BALL" them. Offer them 22000 and see what happens. They just might take it. If not, walk away and let them think about it for a day or so. I promise you they do not want that rig sitting around another winter. They will either accept your offer or try to negotiate some price in between.
You say you "want to be fair". Any price the dealer accepts is "fair" otherwise he would not have accepted it.
Try it, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Low balling has saved me many $$$$ over the years.

The nada guides is at http://www.nadaguides.com . Just be careful when selecting the options it has. Some of the things shown as options are actually standard items on the Mountaineers and Montanas. It might be worth checking the current list of standard and optional items at http://www.keystone-mountaineer.com so you know which to check. Standard items are included in their base price. If you check them as options it will inflate the value.

Yes! Congratulations onyour new rig. Here is a PDI (PerDelivery Inspection) Check List you may want to take with you when you pick up your new trailer. It can be very helpful in getting out some of the pre-existing problems while it is still at the dealers and not in some distant campground.
