New to Montana and to 5th wheels
Hello All!
In a couple of weeks we are picking up our first 5th wheel, a 2011 3400RL. We have looked at different units for months and we really love these units. Our tow vehicle may be a little light but we are going to use it for now - it is a 2003 F250 7.3L diesel.
Any comments are welcome!

Welcome to the MOC. Being new to 5th wheels, I'm sure you'll find this forum very helpful. I know I did, and do. The 3400 is one of the most popular floor plans in the Montana line. Good luck with it.

A little light is a good term.
Your trailer is at 15.500K loaded per Keystone.
Your truck is rated at 13,700 if SRW F250 with 7.3

Nice setup. That 7.3 will pull it easily, just be on your "A" game when going down hill. I used a 2002 F-250 for the first year. Then bought a 2014 F-350 srw, much more comfortable. Full time now. Welcome to the group. Best most helpful site on the internet😋.

I am already looking at some F350's ... sure like to keep my 7.3L though!

2015-16. Model years years have factory Jake brakes that, I believe help with long decending mountain passes. I know, you will have to purchase Diesel exhaust fluid for these cat. 4 engines. Just keep using the tow haul & Jake brake to a minimum. This will reduce your usage.��

A "Jake Brake" i.e. Jacobs Engine Brake, is a entirely different thing than an exhaust brake. A Jake Brake requires a different head on the engine to allow for the valves to be reprogrammed to cause the engine to use compression for brake effect. An exhaust brake, which this engine could have, is a modulated restriction in the exhaust to use the engine compression as a brake.
Neither one has any effect on the use of DEF. DEF is used to burn off the residue on the particulate filter in the exhaust which develops with hard/heavy pulling i.e. rolling coal.

Welcome to the forum. We really like our 3400RL but it's really heavy and can really push you down the hills. As per my signature I added a Banks Speed Brake which takes away any stress that could happen going down steep grades.

You may have already thought of this...airbags?
I'll be putting them on my truck soon. Even though it has no trouble with our 3811ms - I want it to be at factory ride height when we're hooked up. Happy Travels!

Air bags will help level your truck and make it ride better, but they WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR TRUCK'S CARRYING CAPACITY!

X2 on the 7.3 I tow our 04 2955RL with my 2000 F350 SWD crew cab long bed 4x4 no problems at all, down hill up hill or around it  I hate the thought of giving up my 7.3 but I think the next time we upgrade to another 5th wheel I'll be in the market for a newer truck for more comfort and some newer bells and whistles. The wife deserves to travel in a newer vehicle while we're traveling.

Yay for the 7.3!
Just from Salt Lake City to pick up our (new to us) Montana 3400RL. Pulled back with our 2003 7.3L F250. Pulled better than I expected! 40# in air bags and truck was a little high - could let out 5 - 10 # and be level. 7.3 had all she wanted up some of the hills but we were plenty fast enough. Never felt like it was pushing us around.
Orded a dp-tuner, cold air intake and 4" exhaust. We will see what that does! Off to a longer trip at the end of the month.

I believe you're going to need a bigger truck. The new 6.7 power stroke is awesome, the engine brake keeps the wife from putting her foot through the passenger side floor board
