We had a tornado warning, but only got some wind and a lot of rain. Lucked out again.

We were in a tornado warning area, but only had to deal with high winds/rain. I look at it as natures way of getting you a new rv if you happen to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time. There is a price to pay for not having to deal with snow, sleet, and otherwise really crappy weather. John

Bit windy, heavy rain here in St Petersburg, couple of folks lost their awnings because they foolishly left them out.

That's well and good and why we have a shelter at our home base in Kansas, but this storm came thru about 3am. Getting a new rig aside, I don't want to be in here and find out what my clothes feel like in the dryer

This has been a strange weather week down here in SW Florida to say the least. Here in Cape Coral about 8 or 9 days age we had a telephone alert of a Tornado warning (no sirens exist down here). When they issued the warning a twister was already on the ground (EF2) tearing up about 200 homes in the SW part of town. We live in the NE part of town so we just had heavy rain.

Since that clean up effort began there have been two more serious storms blast through with tornadoes in other parts of Florida. The most recent causing a couple of deaths further north.

Even though we don't have a basement to take shelter in, our home is constructed of concrete block/stucco plus has the strapped hurricane rafters. That is not to say that we are tornado proof, but newer homes built since Charlie should be able to stand up to a EF-3 pretty good.

The problem down here is there is really no warning. Up north if the conditions are "right" for an approaching storm to possibly produce a tornado then the NWS issues a Tornado Watch, and if one is spotted then they issue a Tornado Warning. This week it has been our experience down here that they never issue official tornado watches, plus they are pretty slow on the actual warnings.

Anyone down here this year in an RV should have at least one app on their phone active at all times plus probably a weather radio. I would also locate a close by building that was built after 2005 because chances are code required it to be built by strict wind mitigation standards.

According to the weather forecast, SW Florida could be in for another round of severe storms this coming weekend. Be safe.

Agree this year is pretty strange in sw florida. We are just inside desoto county, almost charlotte county. Of course, weather is getting real interesting no matter where you live. Give it a few more years and florida may have snow on the ground instead of just flurries in the panhandle area. I don't remember lee county (ft myers, etc) ever having actual tornadoes touching down like this year. Sure, a couple of puny waterspouts have wandered ashore, but they are like sailors in from the sea...once ashore they fall down due to solid ground. John

What weather apps do you recommend that would sound a warning? Where we are the weather radios are worthless.

Dick, I get weather warnings from the NOAA weather app. Sometimes a bit of a nuisance but I don't want to get sleeping

We had 75 degrees on Christmas Day in south west Va now the forecast is SNOW 27 to 30 inches on Friday. They said that could change. I sure hope so, I think. Just in case I'm putting my snow blade on my tractor. Our private road is .4 miles long. Then there are neighbors. If you have a pickup a tractor or a machine shop you will have friends. I'm lucky I have all three.

Dick, I have 8 weather apps on my I-phone. When the Nations Weather Service issues an emergency warning (Tornado warning, Tornado watch, Hurricane warning, etc.) two of them can sound an audible alert if you have them set up. The two I leave set up for alerts are "The Weather Channel" and "Storm". The Weather Channel app is free and you can custom design what alerts you want to receive.

Same here tornado warning but it was about 4 miles north of us and we stayed in the camper until it was over. but the wind and rain was not much more than the normal summer southwest Florida storms.
