charging the battery

Brand new (used) Montana 2010 2150 RL and I am wondering when the onboard deep cycle battery is being recharged. In theory, when it is plugged into shore power and when I'm towing the RV. But my question is, what position is the battery switch supposed to be in? Off or On?

"On". That switch is a battery cut off switch. Just leave it in the "On" position and forget about it. If your camper goes into long term storage or not plugged into shore power for any length of time, then turn it to the off position.

The labeling of that switch has been an ongoing issue.
Ignore the word "DISCONNECT".
Read it as

BATTERY ON

BATTERY OFF.

Try it, you won't hurt anything. When OFF the red key comes out.
Even when off it does not Disconnect all loads. There are still parasitic loads that will drain your batteries. Radio, propane detector etc.
If you really want it Disconnected, remove the negative battery post cable.

First, welcome to the forum and the Montana family. Two points of clarification. As Daryles said, even though off, you are still discharging the battery. If you put that switch to off and are not plugged in, you will come back to dead batteries. Leave the switch on and if you need to leave it somewhere not plugged in, either disconnect the ground wire to the battery or install a true disconnect. Second, the charge you get from the 7 pin connector is a trickle charge at best. If you need more battery while traveling, either add batteries, solar or DC-DC charging. Best of luck. Lots of good info on all of these topics if you search the forum.
