Big Red meltdown

Saturday afternoon I filled big Red with some fresh Diesel, about 30 gals to be exact. On the way home which is 5 miles from town my truck started to stall, spit, shake and all that nasty stuff. By that time I was about 6 blocks from the house so figured I would make it home and tow it to the Dodge Dealer. In that 6 block trip my console said Regen needed, 80% full, 90% and then the old 100% full sign. All this in 4 blocks!

Called Allstate Motor Club and they came out about 40 min. later and hooked on, it looked like "Lighting Mac Queen hooked on behind TowMater in the Cars movie" for all you folks with a 4 year old grandson.

As of 5 pm tonight they said they changed the particulate filter and cleaned the turbo. I think it is more then that, but they say that is what was wrong. They had it done by 5 pm but they wanted to road test it in the am. I will edit this tomorrow with update.

Truck is 2007.5 Dodge 6.7 auto

Sounds like water in fuel to me...

I hope you have a receipt for the fuel purchase...

Ask the dealership to check for water - FYI - factory warranty will not cover water in fuel, but insurance should, and they will go after the service station if that is the culprit.

Good luck!

Thanks for the feed back. These thoughts have crossed my mine. I am waiting for the dealer to call this am. I have a feeling something else is the problem as the truck was acting strange before the filter plugged. One thought was I haven't seen a Regen notice since last March, so I thought some type of computer problem.

Kilch123, When I say it was acting strange I was talking about the 5 min. before the DPF problem. Also every thing was fine before adding fuel.

Update: Here is what the work order has on it "Checked for codes DPFDPF,P242F and P2262, Turbo Boost pressure not detected, Mechanic installed cleaning port and cleaned turbo, serviced Injectors, replaced DPFE and temp sensors".

So looks like they changed the DPF filter and replaced 2 ea. exhaust temp sensors. It seems to run fine on the way home. I would also have to say thanks to Rainier Dodge in Olympia for working my truck in without any appointment on Monday morning.

Larry it sounds like they fixed the problem from the way you are talking, was it under the smog warintee it sounds like all that stuff mentioned is smog related equiptment.

P242f-diesel Particulate Filter Restriction - Ash Accumulation

P2262-turbocharger Boost Pressure Not Detected - Mechanical

It sorta get a person wondering if the truck was ever doing a regen I just had my Dodge computer reprogramed for just about what happened to you. I'll be watching mine now.

Thanks for all the good information.

Yep - there was a TSB about that sliding nozzle in the turbo getting stuck too.

Glad they got you back on the road so quick!

Props to Rainier Dodge!

Yes it was covered. I checked it has a 5 year 100,000 mile coverage for the smog equipment. All I can say is when these sensors go out you are not going to travel very far. I think they must have had a few of these problems as they installed 2 ports on the turbo for easy cleaning. I will have to look to see where they are installed so maybe can post a photo or two.

Thanks for sharing this post. I have never seen a light or message about regereration but just today on level ground from Lake Havasu to Parker at 60mph my pyro was reading 1200* It lasted about 12 minutes and then the pyro returned to normal. No message ever showed up. When I run out of warranty I think some of that stuff will fall off the truck.

Clutch I have seen 2 Regen requests both in a 2 week period. This was when I was working close to a job site. I only drove about 5 miles to work every day, at a speed below 40 mph. Also where are you headed since you were going thru Parker.

Don,
My first regen on my 09 2500 was at 9700 miles. I have had some longer runs but a lot of my driving is just around town. It went just like the book said it would.

I had no idea that regen is something that should happen. I have never had a regen on my '06 RAM 3500. I have 71,000 miles, am I supposed to have had a regen?

Larry, where did you buy your fuel in Olympia, we buy fuel in the area, too.

No particulate filters on diesel trucks prior to 2007.5 and therefore no re-gen. Those were the good ones and will last forever. Lots of concerns with particulate filters and when do they regen; creates a lot of back pressure on the turbos as your delta "P" goes up. Electronics must work perfectly always under all conditions to maintain efficiency. A lot of the systems are coming off because of the numerous problems and poor technical support; warranty or no warranty issue!!

Robbie I filled this tank at Pacific Pride on the west side in Olympia. It looks like it has nothing to do with the fuel. I got a free tank fill up from my boss, I could not turn him down. Sorry it took so long to reply but I talked my surgeon letting me work a job on light duty. So for the next 2-3 months I am going to work at the Biodiesel Plant in Aberdeen. I was a GF on this plant when we built it a couple of years ago. One day last week they blew up the Glycerin blending tank and since I was the one that installed it I get to replace it.

Try Goggle Imperium Renewables glycerin

Edit I do not think you truck needs to Regen. Dodge started the smog junk in 2007. Other members might know more about this.

Hi Larry,

My 07 has had a similar problem. The particulate filled up a couple times. I also took it to Rainier Dodge and the last time (about 9 months ago) they had a new computer update. Not only did my truck run better and have no further issues, but it shifted different and not so harsh. Not sure what that was all about, but the truck runs great and a little better mileage now.
