How to add magazine rack to thin wall?

My 2015 High Country 293RK has a computer desk area next to refrigerator. I tried to attach a light weight magazine rack on the wall to hold travel papers etc using sticky velcro strips but they just tore off the thin outside paper on the wall when I bumped it. I don't know the exact thickness of the wall board, and did not try to drill a hole to find out. See photo.

The paperboard wall, or whatever it is, is quite thin, and almost no room behind it next to the refrigerator for typical Molly bolts.

Looking for ideas of how to do this on such a thin wall with some level of security.

Just lots of short screws through another wooden panel of some kind, then attach rack to that panel with screws?

Don

Can you rest the bottom of the rack on the desktop for added support?

I could but prefer not to keep as much desktop space as possible. Every few inches helps in this setup.

I would try "3M brand" double backed tape. Its of higher quality than a lot of others on the market.

Another idea is "Command Strips" with the hooks. 2 small holes in top of file holder(1 each corner) and let the hooks from the command strips attach at that point.

Agree, but..

I agree on the quality of those. My concern is that their adhesion is far greater than the adhesion between the wall's decorative paper covering and its underlying material. The velcro strips I used pulled it off.

Don, have you gone on the outside of your unit, removed the refrigerator grate and checked to see if there is space between the refrig and the wall to install a piece of 1X2 or even a piece of lath that can be glued into place so you can fasten your magazine rack to the wall using screws? It seems to me there is enough space between them to put that piece of wood and this may be your solution to mounting the rack, giving it more support behind the wall to screw to and stability on the wall also for the magazine rack.

Like Rondo said there should be room between the back of the wall and the frig to get some 1 by in there for screws!

Good suggestion.

I'll definitely investigate that! Thanks.

That panel is most likely only 1/8" thick. Just screw it on with screws that will barely go through it. As you can see double sided tape causes damage when being removed. The holes can be filled in with a color putty stick if it is removed at a later date.

You can use a step bolt. These come in different configurations but they have a large diameter but thin head that works in tight clearances. It will provide plenty of support on that thin wall.

Molly bolts may be it.

I pulled off the outside cover of the fridge, and discovered several things. The wall in question is about a foot past the side edge of this opening and only have about 2 inches between fins and outside wall to get hands or boards in there. Way too tight.

However I did discover that there is 2.5 to 3 inches between inside of wall and side of fridge such that molly bolts would fit after all, sticking into insulation somewhat. I have an endoscope that works with cell phone to see in tight places.

The two attachment slot heads on the rack would then fit over the heads of the screws. Now to find the exact size needed.

Thanks all.

Anything other than simple wood screws that go into that panel more than say 1/4" or so would be over kill. If any kind of moly/toggle bolt is used it WILL leave a large hole when the rack is removed. Just screw it on and be done with it.

This is a link to anchor screws that I have used to attach towel racks and hand rail. I know it states concrete but they are great for drywall and if you get the right size, good for thin 1/8" board. They are bad about spinning when installing so grip rim with pliers until almost tight.

I found that cutting off part of the wings on a moly bolt and shortening the shank allows them to be used on thinner walls, including the inside of exterior walls. In the ,atter case, you need to dig out a litle foam to allow the moly to grab.

Did you try Command strips? I have a key rack held up by strips and I'm amazed how it holds the weight of both our sets of keys sometimes with the heavy key fobs.

Command Strips

We have used the Command Strips for hanging relatively heavy pictures in our Montana. They come rated for different weights. Be sure to clean the area with alcohol to remove any grease

Command strips are great, but..

The issue in my case is that the adhesive quality of command strips, or velcro that I used, is greater than the paper layer on the wallboard, hence the paper layer just separated from the wall.

Magazine rack above desk

Another GREAT solution is to use a "Pop-Rivit" to attach the shelf to the wall. This will only take about 1/8" space on each side of the wall.

Let us know if this works for you

3M make a hook and loop that is one heckuva lot stronger then the usual Velcro brand industrial strength which also has lousy stickum: https://www.amazon.com/3M-Reclosable...70_&dpSrc=srch. It's $$ cheaper at Home Depot

Then there are these that I use on our HC 343RL. They are screw in hollow door anchors. I found some that are about 3/4" long at Home Depot though have not used them in a slide wall but side walls to anchor a railing up the stairs, towel racks in the batheoom plus a couple coat hooks:https://www.homedepot.com/p/E-Z-Anco...5225/202055965.

Your slide walls are the thickness of a window frame. Use that as the nominal max length of anchors though a shorter one should be found. Just use care as an outside slide wall repair wont be much fun

I used 3/4" molly bolts as the anchors for numerous thing such as the toilet paper holder and a heavy clock, so they should work for your application However, there is a squeeze tool to anchor the molly bolts that means you don't have to try to hold it while trying to keep it from spinning. It's called a Glarks Heavy Duty Gun Wall Anchor Metal Setting Tool. You back out the bolt a little to fit in the gun. Push the bolt in the hole. Squeeze the trigger. It expands the molly bolt until it is against the wall.
