Buy the extended waranty

Well it happened. the cooling unit has failed on our Norcold 1210, it started one day a week ago with the ice cream melting and i reset the unit and it started working again and then a couple of days ago the fridge was at 60 and the freeze at 40. so i called my rv tech guy and he did a few diagnostics over the last couple of days to see if the unit has failed, well it did so he is calling in the extended warranty and now we are getting a new cooing unit. he will have to pull the unit out and he said he was glad to see that our unit has a movable island and said is that a stock feature and we said that Montana only made this unit for a very short time and we love it and he said he did too being now we can push it out of the way so the fridge has lots of room to work on. so i have been told over the past that the extended warranty is a throw your money away thing but this is the third time, one with this unit and a couple of cars in the past we have owned and had to use it and now recommend buying it when they offer it. because the extended warranty has now paid for itself.

I am right there with you. I have avoided extended warrantees on nearly everything that they have been offered on. Well, my 3750FL has waaaaaayyy too much stuff in it that if something failed, would end up being big bucks out of my wallet. 5 slides, 3 TVs, a hydraulic system, electric/electronic everything... The extended warranty on this item was a good choice.

Will I need the extended warranty? Maybe not... Maybe I will. I have protection should I need it. Really the extended warranty boils down to a personal decision. For me, once you get past a certain dollar amount, it just makes sense.

Same here, have one on the Monty and also on our Prius. Not one on the truck, however, not as many things I'm worried about.

Never used to be a fan of extended warrantees but with the fairly high breakdown rate of these fridges and increased problems with the slides and the level up systems it doesn't take much to at least break even.

We have carried the extended warranty on our last three units and never regretted it. It's now called peace of mind!

Would imagine that the price of a new cooling unit and labor falls around 2500. If ext'd warr. is close to this and you want to stay with an absorption fridge, then it all balances out. Got to pay to live...for everything. Bummer that it died. John

I do not know were the idea of "breaking even" or not getting your money back on a extended warranty came from but it does not apply to any other form of insurance . We have always had them on our Montana and truck as one major failure could hurt us bad. With the fridge and we have had two go bad one in the 06 3400 and one in this 13 3402. They will replace the cooling unit not the entire fridge and the cost will be in the 500 to 800 $$ area we have the bills. Holding tanks about 500.00 each Hot water tank repair not replacement as the Keystone wiring installation to the tank was improper in the 200.00 area. Note we have had 10..yes 10 holding tank failures in our two Montana's. A awning replacement 500 to 600 .00 awning shipping, installation. I watched them install the main slide awning last week and you better know what you are dong. Our personal choice is the extended warranty. Now we are high end users. We use the Montana hard lots of miles lots of live in them time.

Its going to be around 2500 dollars and the warranty was 2400 dollars but that also covered an awning going bad a stereo DVD went out and a new ignitor in the water heater. i call that a win win. because who has 3000 dollars just sitting around these days. LOL

I would not get an extended warranty on a new RV. Most of it's systems are covered for three years. You'd be paying for a warranty to cover things that are already under warranty.

I have not had an rig yet that had any internal component that was covered for three years other than the roof? We have always elected to have the extended warranty as I can easily afford the price of it spread over time (Good Sam allows quarterly payments) rather than being hit with an expensive repair at one time. We have had occasions to use them in the past, and fully anticipate that we will have occasions to use them in the future. It is merely another form of insurance that we personally, elected and prefer to have. I will add that we elect for the six year after the first year Montana warranty coverage.

Smart move! I never go without one and i paid the the same 1800 bucks for 7 years,if a $3500.00 fridge goes out or a slide goes south when you are out on the road you will be glad not to shell out that kind of cash out of savings just like me I am retired and got to watch the money and the Extended Warranty i bought just added about 20 bucks to my RV payments every month. one less thing to worry about.NO BRAINER

We have Cornerstone 7 year ultimate warranty, covers just about everything minus light bulbs max deductible 100 dollars on large dollar items. But we bought it when we bought the Monty. Not sure if its available as a buy in, It might be only a dealer offer.

I see a lot of post about warranty coverage but see very little about how much they are costing you. Wholesale warranty which was a bundler is now dumping some of their coverage companies that take over covering your rig. Wholesale is now going to do their own coverage at least they tell me that. Make sure when you buy one of these warranties that they are not a bundler and just set you up with someone else to cover your rig. Make sure you get it in writing that they are actually covering your rig and not selling it to someone else.

What wholesale warranties does is what any insurance agent does they sell many different companies policies. Wholesale warranties is not a insurance company same as your insurance agent is not a insurance company. Our agent sells may different policies and we are bundled under Progressive. Our first policy through Wholesale warranties was a 7 year RV shield policy that cost 1107.00 but that was back in 2006.We now have good Sam that is a 3 year policy that cost 733.00. We did not want a 7 year policy as we do not think we will be RV'ing that long.

I paid $2,200 (added to the loan payment) three years ago when the rig was new. I'm sure the cost when new is less as there is the factory warranty. Anyway, I have a $100 deductible. Just finished getting my claim resolved for the level up valve and pump motor, in addition to the hotel/meals allowance of up to $200/day. Total recovered after deductible was $1,700 after deductible. I have 3 years remaining on the warranty. It is through Interstate. I wasn't too thrilled with their approach to the motor claim, but after some discussions, they came around. Even if I don't use the warranty any more, I feel good about the peace of mind it provides.

I might as well throw my 2 cents worth in. We bought the Monty last June and purchased a 7 year extended warranty including tire / wheel damage. Cost was $2600 with a $100 deductible. Our thought was if we are full timers and 1000 miles from home, we want some peace of mind that a blown axle or damaged roof would not put us in the poor house with out of pocket expenses. Easier to add it on the purchase than dig $1000-$2000 out of my pocket when not expecting it. It is the same as any insurance, it is a bet that something may happen while we all hope nothing does.

Tire coverage also covers the tow vehicle, although my vehicle insurance covered $2700 in body damage when I blew a tire on I-95 last summer and tore up a rear fender. Still $275 for a replacement tire because of potholes would have been covered!

The Insurance game - betting you will have a problem, hoping you don't and getting to pay for the privilege to play! Such a deal!
