I had the self-greasing units on our rig when we bought it. When I greased, I over greased. In other words, being an old farm boy, if one squirt was good, two was better and three was even better. You can guess what happened; I blew out the seals.

When we purchased the Mor/ryde individual suspension axles, we didn't have the self-greasers installed because the Dexter rep said that they didn't recommend them for the very reason that I over greased. When I asked him why they had them installed on new units that Keystone was selling, he said, "Because you buy them."

As far as repacking goes, since we travel full time, I have them packed once a year. This gives me coverage as far as Dexter recommends: every 12 months or 12,000 miles. This also allows for the brakes and bearings to be checked. It's really preventive maintenance.

So...as Orv states is best method. I'm part timer and keep to a 2 year program as much less travel done here. Agree no way I use the hub zerks as Murphy follows me everywhere.
> Repack my bearing by hand after cleaning all old grease out of hubs and bearings
> Apply enough to ooze out of bearings but that is all I use, no extra in hub
> Replace the cotter pin anytime I'm in there
> Been doing this since my father taught me the "how to" and never doubted his teaching...
#1 be safe...#2 why not if going on vacation is not being held up with a breakdown?

Annually for the grease.
