Hitch help

We are purchasing a 2017 Montana 3710FL and will be pulling with short box Ram. Question :
Do I need a slider or will standard hitch work with the Montana? I was told the Cap is molded to accept a regular hitch??

True/Untrue??

Thanks!

Craig,

Welcome to the forum!

I would recommend a slider. A standard hitch is less expensive but you have a great likelyhood of damage to your truck. You can hit the truck even with a slider but it is less likely. Would recommend an auto slider over a manual one.

Welcome to the MOC family from Washington St! Some will say you don't need a slider with the newer front cap's until it to late I have a long box so I cant say but i'v seen the dents in the cab of those short box trucks without a slider. Get a auto slider if you have a shot box truck.

Slider. My last truck was a short bed with dents on both sides plus a $400 rear glass replacement (learning curve)....

I won’t buy another short bed but I live in the country with plenty of parking and also like the extra room

Welcome to the group. Just saw a pickup in the last rv park with a plywood rear window. And yes, he was towing a fifth wheel.

I've been pulling with a short bed with a Reese manual slider since 2005 and have seldom needed to use it, however the few times I did use it I was glad I had it. Remember, it's the unexpected that will get you! One time while waiting to get to a gas pump where I had to act quickly when it emptied, I had to make a tight turn and made slight contact with the cab. I was lucky, as it left just a slight dent and paint scuff that you don't notice unless I point it out. Therefore my advice is to make the investment in a auto slider if you can, if not at least get a manual slider. Check the various rv classifieds or Craigslist if you want to save some money.

Welcome to the forum! We pull with a short bed and originally had a Reese slider. Replaced it with a Pullrite when I got a great deal at the Central Plains Rally. Very nice just to steer and not worry about it.

I would recommend the pullrite slider. It really worked great for me on my past 3/4 ton Ford truck. It is fully automatic your just need to lube the rails . Only downside is adding the capture plate on the fifth wheel .

Pullrite slider, no remembering to get out and move a lever. It is auto slide.

I used a Pullrite for two 5th wheels with my short bed RAM. I went to a Reese 5th Airborne Sidewinder hitch pin, which we love, and a Demco Recon hitch.

Pullrite is very heavy, messy, and takes up a lot of room in the bed.

I have the Pullrite superslider. And it does it’s job, BUT, I’d save your money and get a real hitch and save your back. Get B&W manual slider. It’s there when you need it. If you go with Pullrite, do your homework. They have some issues too. You will hate it if you try to hook or unhook at any small angle, but it’ll say that in the manual. You have to clean and lube the rails every time you use it, and you have to purchase a special capture plate too. Hitches are like Fords and Chevy’s, people either love or hate them, IMHO. Good luck with your decision. Just do a lot of research. And for me, I love my under mounted rails.
