Galveston Island State Park, Texas
Heads-up on the Galveston Island State Park in Galveston, TX. We've camped there on several non-holiday weekends with great success. The roads and spaces are HUGE and easy to navigate. Any size rig will fit. We've never been turned away due to overcrowding (again, non-holiday weekends). Although a rather bland park by Texas standards, the RV slips are on the Gulf shore and there are hundreds of acres of wetlands to explore on the "bayou side". Terrific variety of birds, semi-clean restrooms and showers, and 15/30/50 amp service in most RV slips. Although you are out on a relatively secluded stretch of the island, there are some nice little restaraunts and quikie marts close by (Jamaica Beach is 2 miles west of the park). Be advised that it is ALWAYS windy on this part of the island (difficult to use the awning in anything but the HOT, still mid-summer days), and the rig will tend to get pretty sandy if parked on the first row, nearest the beach. Park on a back row in one of the "pods", and your rig will stay clean as a whistle.

Pete, We are just back from a ski trip to Crested Butte, Colorado. Thanks for your post on the Galveston Island State Park. We are signed up for a cruise out of Galveston on April 2 (free RV parking included), but we will probably wish to come a day early and spend a night in the RV. Sounds like this may be the place.

We stayed there last night! Wish we had more time there. We especially liked the fact that they let you walk your dog on the beach. We traveled there from Beaumont via the ferry. That is a neat trip, and the Montana was no problem on the ferry. (and it is free!)

Really glad to hear about the ferry trip. That was a question on another thread. We like that trip, too. It's not quite like taking the ferry from San Fran to Sausalito, but it's a very relaxing ride. Padredw- Although the park is at the opposite end of town from the ship docks, it's only about a 15 or 20 minute drive, AND you'll get to see the entire city of Galveston. To see the most "stuff", take Broadway all the way to the Seawall (I-45 turns into Broadway as it gets onto the Island). Seawall, going west (right), takes you straight to the park.

Pete, once again I thank you. This is exactly the kind of information that I find helpful. Let me know if you ever want to know about some of the East Texas parks.

Glad to help! One of our favorite parks is up in the Piney Woods. We made a trip out to Martin Dyes SP last year, and LOVED it. Looking forward to a return trip!

If boating or fishing or just listening to the wind in the pines is what you're looking for we recommend Wind Creek State Park, Alexander City, AL. It's the largest campground in the SE US, and the largest state-owned campground in the US! It's cited along the northeastern shore of Lake Martin, which is fed by the Tallapoosa River. If history is your thing, Horseshoe Bend national battlefield park is only a few minutes away - the site of Andrew Jackson's defeat of the Redsticks (Creek Indians). Prices are reasonable, there are playgrounds for the kids, a marina and store, and boat rentals. If this is too far south for you, there's a northern version of this at Joe Wheeler State Park in northern Alabama, on the Tennessee River. Enjoy Alabama!

Now, Bob and Margie, don't let everyone in our favorite secret place, Wind Creek State Park. There won't be any room for us! It's a wonderful place to camp and only 30 miles from our home.
