One for the Weight Police

While filling up in VA this afternoon in came a 5th wheel with Alabama plates, nothing special I suppose until you realize it is a Chevy 2500 short bed pulling a Doubletree Elite Suites. Trailer GVWR 20,000#, Dry Weight 14,900#, Pin Weight 3270#. Can we say OVERLOADED? We almost bought a Doubletree until we looked at the weight and I didn't want to get a 5500 truck. I can't believe the weight overload on the rear tires on that rig. I was being driven by a happy young man (30's) that didn't have a clue, his dealer told him it was a good fit for his truck. This dealer should not be in business.

Okay, enough ranting, I'll close.

If you will buy it, they will sell it to you. It's all about the sale. JMHO.

Like the guy on RV.net, pulling a Teton with the same truck noted above..."pulls fine never had a problem."

It being a Chevy makes it OK. I thought everyone knew that.

We live just off a major highway that carries a lot of RV traffic and I frequently see sights similar to what you describe. Just a couple days ago I passed a 2500 short bed pulling a triple axle toy hauler (don't remember the brand) that had to be at or near 40'. No telling what he had in the back of it. Like your man, he appeared just as young, happy, and proud as he could be.

Will,
They are probably right but the real question is how far will it tow it and can it STOP it?

Bishop's in Corpus. They actually towed their units to the RGV for a show using a 2500HD (150 miles or so). They invited me to hitch up and take it for a test pull. I don't really mind pushing the limits, as long as I don't get over the rear axle capacity, but I know when I'm whupped! Those units are heavy!

Okay Don and Judy, I was waiting for that.

In his case he probably needs to go to a dually 3500 or a 4500 and that means a new truck.

Folks just don't realize there is more to the tow ratings than a driver's comfort. I grin about the Weight Police comments, but my mentality is "Bodges, we dun neet no steenkin' bodges"... we should all be weight conscious... after all, being overweight is not illegal until you get caught in an accident, then you are only negligent and liable, not illegal.

We had a gentleman at our park in Florida this year that had a 2006,2500,4X4 Dodge Hemi pulling a 38-40 ft travel supreme, triple axle. Asked why he only had a hemi and he said, his wife hates diesel's. Before he left we made sure he put some more air in his truck tires. He was pulling with only 65 lbs in them. UNBELIEVABLE

And I worry that my F350 6.0 dually diesel is too small.

(for a 36 foot Montana)

Sure glad he wans't driving a Ford.

HOWEVER-I know we are all green and inexperienced when we first start out, BUT, apparently this man and many others forget to investigate, and come to GOOD FORUMS like the MOC for some Good Information.

Have a Good Day

I recently upgraded tow vehicles. Going from a Class 2 truck to a Class 8 was a day/night difference. Last week while on the way home from my first trip pulling with the Volvo (600 miles round trip) I was passed by triple axle toy hauler. We were entering a construction zone and the speed dropped from 70mph to 55mph. I was already doing 55 and this guy passed me like I was sitting still. I know it was a single rear wheel truck but he went by so fast I could not tell if it was a class 2 or 3 truck. He scared me and I was not riding with him.

A Select series Double Tree was on our short list. We decided on the Monty in the end. We also originally thought that we could get by for a few years with the F250 with the Monty. A 4k mile trip and the associated repairs required after driving that many miles overloaded was enough for us to decide to upgrade now instead of later. With the Ford the trailer would constantly remind me it was back there, with the Volvo I have to check to make sure it is still there.

RickW,
Nice looking setup! Is you hitch at the very rear of your truck? With the Jeep onboard you'd almost have to have the hitch hanging off the rear just to have enough clearance for turns.

Thanks and travel safely. I'm still working on trying to get my DW to let me get one of those trucks. So far no luck but I'll keep trying.
