Mattress upgrade from queen to King

Was wondering if anyone had modified bed in a 3400rl to accommodate a king size mattress. And what other mods were needed to make this work?

Thanks in advance

I believe the only thing you have to do is enlarge the platform top plywood to king size. We had a king bed in our 3400. The mattress has to be the radius king due to the location of the sink cabinet since the mattress goes against the cabinet when the slide is retracted. When you order king size from the factory, the platform is king size versus a queen size platform when the queen is ordered. The hinge would have to be changed as well. Another alternative would be to add to the top of the queen platform, but that will increase the weight to be lifted to access the under-bed storage.

We had the Factory King in our previous Monty (2955RL) and the platform was in two sections. The lower section was wider to support the King, but the section in the slide was only Queen size width. Not much weight on the head end, and the hinge was only the width of the queen portion.

mhs4771 is correct. The lower section is the plywood section sized to fit the mattress. I cut a king down to fit a queen. I think you could go the other way and upsize the plywood to fit a king.

Thanks for the correction all (I was never aware of the difference but it makes since from a cost-cutting construction viewpoint). The other thing that I do specifically remember is in addition to the radius king needed, the platform edges at the vanity sink cabinet and the closet side is cut at 45 degree angle so the platform does not hit the sink cabinet. I don't know if this is unique to the 3400 or if all king beds are cut in a similar fashion (I would think so due to the radius mattress corners). I would recommend measuring for the cut on the lower plywood section with the slide retracted to make sure the platform plywood cannot hit the cabinet.

The only structural change is the platform from the hinges to the foot end. We changed ours in reverse and took it down from a king to a queen and all had to be done was to trim the edges of the platform about 3 inches on both sides. As stated in earlier post, the top (head) portion is the same size on both queen and king. BTW, I have the King mattress that was only slept on for 5 times if anyone is interested. If you are going to a king size, the rv size in only 76 inches vs. the 80 inches for the standard residential mattress.

We intend to go from king down to queen. DW is getting cranky having to do a side step shuffle just to get into the bed.
