3650 sway problems

We recently purchased a 2005 3650 Montana RV. We pull it with a 2004 350 diesel crew cab, short box. In a 5-10 MPH side wind, we can only go about 50-60 mph, otherwise we are afraid of losing it. It's possible we don't have enough pin weight. The dealer says noone else has mentioned this problem. We had a 2001 Sunny Brook prior to this one and pulled it all over the country and never had this problem. Has anyone out there experienced this problem with the 3650 and if so, what's the solution. No problem with a 3670. Montanas generally tow very easily. First off, check tires and tire pressures on both the trailer and tow vehicle.

I'm sure you will get a lot of comments from others, but I doubt that this is a common problem.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble towing. Your's may be the very first ever complaint of this type I've heard. I do not have the same model as you --- I have the 3295RK --- and I've towed it with two different vehicles and NEVER had a swaying problem! I've been in severe winds from head on to 100% crosswinds to tail winds.... NEVER any trouble swaying. I am really curious as to the cause of your situation so please let us know when you resolve the problem. As OnMont has stated... "... I doubt this is a common problem."

I'd try filling the water tank to see if the additional pin weight will help. Not too many people with this problem.

We have the same model but an 04, pull it with an 02/F-550, no problems yet, but of course this an advantage of using a heavier duty truck and larger tires. My motto is you can never have too much truck when towing, you can tow it with a smaller truck, but it alot more fun with a bigger one.

Montana-Bill, our experience is the same as HamRad's. Never ever a sway problem. With full tanks. Without full tanks. Heavily loaded. Empty. Doesn't matter.

First I'd check tires on the trailer. Air them to the max it says on the sidewall. 80 psi if they're load range E tires. Also check tires on the truck. The rear ones should be at or near max (we run 75 psi in the rear and 55 to 65 in the front).

Then check to see if the Montana is level or very close to level. You want it level. If not level, then very slightly nose low is preferable to nose high. If you're very much unlevel then that's your problem. With that truck it should be pretty level. If not, the pinbox on the Montana is adustable and your hitch in the truck may also be adjustable.

Your truck is too new and too heavy to have sagging springs in the rear but I'll ask anyhow. By any chance is it traveling tail low when towing the Montana?

Are you sure it's swaying?? Not to sounnd like a dumb blonde (I'm brunette by the way) but maybe what you think is swaying is just the feel of the wind. You can notice on windy days the difference but to actually say you see it swaying then I don't know.

I'd bet it's tire pressure on the truck and/or the unit. Follow sreigel's tire recommendations. Let us know what you find out.

Our 3400 did not sway but after travelling 3500 miles with no problems we stopped off at home to take some of the things out of our RV, mostly things that were stored forward of the wheels.The short journey to our storage area with a light pinweight was very bumpy and quite uncomfortable.
