Thanks Rich,

Great info. I talked to a camper that did this for a living for while and there are pitfalls.

One such pitfall is some Trailer Mfgr will not pay the fees levied by the weigh stations. Some will some won't. So one trick is not to haul for those companies that won't pay. He mentioned a few. The driver may get stuck for these fees.

It is certainly no get rich quick scheme but can be profitable by hauling both ways otherwise one leg of the journey is on you.

If I were younger I might try it.

When I first retired I looked into this and found it not be very profitable considering the wear and tear (depreciation from high mileage) on your truck, food, lodging cost, oil and transmission fluid changes and traveling back/home without a load. I tried to find a profit in their mileage rates but couldn't?

I did not think it was a good deal at all at 1.06 per one way mile but I know a few M.O.C'ers were doing some towing for FEMA and thought this may be of interest. Not to mention the wear and tear on your TV////

I might be interested in towing some trailers from Florida to Mississippi but I doubt I would go to Indiana to get one. Anyway it is good information.

Ladies and gentlemen, I can speak from some experience about this.

In 1994 I bought a brand new GMC 1 ton dually with the latest and greatest 6.6 litre turbo diesel. Ran great the whole time I had it. Outfitted it with all of the hitches and 100 gallon fuel tank in the front of the bed right behind the cab. Back then diesel was .95 cents a gallon. After two years all I had to show for it was nearly worn out truck and a nearly worn out body.

I did get occasional "back hauls" which did help out on the profit line. The only good thing about it was I got to see a bunch of country.

The only way I would consider it again would be for an emergency situation to help someone out and it paid all of the trip expences.

If someone is retired and in good health and wants to do it occasionally to see some country and meet people, go for it. But, it won't buy you a new truck and pay for all of lifes niceties.

MIMF..thanks for that insight..I had the thought that it might be something to do but after looking at the web site and doing some elementary math it did not seem like a good thing to do.Can see the country with the Montana in tow. There are some local dealers that will pay fuel and 100/150.00 to run up to Ind and pick up a camper for them..that would be a better deal///
