Indiana Covered Bridge Festival

We were at the festival last week, 10-8 thru 10-17. Was anybody else there? We had not been there since 1996. It has gotten pretty big. Lots of people. They were estimating 2 million, I think that was kind of high. The weather was nice until tues wendsday when the weather started to get wet and cold. We still went out everyday. It is still fun to get out and see the bridges and the small towns and home made crafts. Although you have to look harder to find them somtimes. The crafts that is! Its nice to go back now and then and bring back memories. My first time there was in 1974 when it was not quite so hectic.

Terry and Barb, in which part of Indiana are these covered bridges? We didn't know IN had any. We just left the Elkhart area this past Monday, 10/18, so were there when you're talking about. We had planned to spend some time in Madison County, IA, seeing the bridges but had to forego that this time around so would have enjoyed seeing them in IN.

Thanks.

The festival is in Parke county. South and east of indy. The center of all of the festival is in Rockville on the square. There are quite a few bridges in that county and Putman county has a few also. Terry

There are 32 covered bridges in Parke County, IN.(Rockville) Dating from 1863 'til 1902. Putnam County has some but I couldn't find a number. We were there on Sat. and Sunday of the festival week but didn't take the 5er. Did see a couple Montanas parked in the fairgrounds on US 41 N when we checked about coming down next year. Incedentally, Parke County is west and a little south of Indianapolis.

Thanks for all the info! I've saved this thread on my laptop for future reference. Covered bridges are among the many things we enjoy seeing.

If you are thinking of camping somewhere down in that area you better make you reservations early especially the state parks. They fill up fast We have not been down there in years Hope to soon.

Thanks, Ron. It won't be until maybe late spring next year for us but I'll keep that in mind.

That should give you a start for information. One of my good memories of Indiana was this time of year. I was a transplanted Pilgrim and did not like the midwest much but I did get to visit a lot of interesting areas and we attended the Covered Bridge Festival every year as Roy's family owned a lot of what is now Raccoon Lake. If you attend next year don't miss Billie Creek Village and some of the mills.
