New York City

We will be travelling to Philadelphia to visit friends. Our plan would be to find a nice camp ground close to Philly and also be able to take either the subway or the train for day trips into New York city. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how best we can do this. Plan to arrive near the end of May after Gettysburg.

Both cities are 95 miles apart. Be prepared to pay the tolls if you go by car. You have the N.J. Turnpike and the Washington Bridge. You pay through the nose
going into NYC but the Washington Bridge is free when you leave the city. Unfortunately you have to pay the NJ Turnpike tolls both ways. I don't know about train service between the two cities but for being on time that would be the way to go or bus service which has the same traffic jam problems which can occur
just like car travel. Good luck and enjoy your time in the cities.

I was hoping to find a camp site which would be near a park and ride (train/subway). I understand that there is a distance so if we find a camp site in between both locations we could travel by car to visit relatives in Philly and find a station to park and ride into New York.

I just checked my Good Sam's Road Atlas and I couldn't find a campground half-way between the two. There are no campgrounds I can find in Phillie itself. There are a couple outside of the city but further away from NYC. The only campgounds I find in N.J. are in Mount Laurel, and Mount Holly. These two are in route to
NYC and not that far from Phillie and fairly close to the N.J.Turnpike. There are other campgrounds in N.J. but further South and way off the the route to NYC.
Wish I could have been more help. My Good Sam Atlas is a few years old so there may be a new campground along the route that isn't shown on my book. I don't know if there is any rail service near the two campground mentioned in N.J. Good Luck

Thanks Sky. I also saw the same issue but thought that someone may have something that I may have missed.

Try this CG: http://www.timberlanecampground.com/ (856-423-6677) 117 Timberlane Road Clarksboro, NJ 08020 CG is 18.9 miles from downtown Philadelphia and is rated a 9 in TL on-line navigator software. Perhaps they can help you with train transportation to NY.

We've stayed at Timberlane Campground in Clarksboro, NJ. It's easy access to I295 and they say it's the closest campground to Phila. There are several rail options to get into either Philadelphia or New York. Personally I would not drive to either, but that's just me.

I should add that I grew up in this area and am pretty familiar with the rail options.
