You would think Ford would know better about not putting Aluminum and Steel together

Just finished picking up my TV from the dealer. Seems Ford has decided it is okay to put steel valve stems in Aluminum rims on Duallys. I got lucky and it was the seals that were pinched and torn.

Dealer was having issues with Ford and their infinite wisdom.

There shouldn't be any steel touching the aluminum wheel if the valve stem is installed correctly. But when you have to figure that putting these together, it isn't a high skill job and that's where the last guy hired gets his first upgrade from floor sweeper.

Then there is the problem of wheels 'welded' to iron hubs, especially after a year or so in the rus/salt belt - but the steel lug nuts are never a problem.

Conundrums abound

Just wondering, have you put a magnet up against the valve stems? There is a very good chance that they are brass, probably plated, not steel.

They have been replaced. New ones are supposed to be brass.
The Dealer has a guy dedicated to fix them.

Steel and aluminum touching isn’t necessarily a problem. Ford has had aluminum hoods with steel hinges for years. Audi’s flagship cars are aluminum and of course Ford pickups now all have aluminum bodies. I’ve had two and now Chevy pickups have aluminum doors, hoods and chassis parts. All or these cars and trucks have aluminum and steel parts touching without problem.

There has to be insulation between the aluminum and steel or you get galvanic reaction. AL being the loser. The issue they are having with their rims is the seal that separates the 2 doesn't always keep the 2 from touching. Sealing surface of rim gets pitted and rim has to be replaced.

Aftermarket add ons to the AL bodied trucks even as mundane as mudflaps require Al washers and tabs at the contact points of AL body
