Shock absorbers

Well, the time has come to replace the shocks on my 2000 F250Super Duty. Bilsteins have been recommended. I have gotten two bids, one for $900, which was bad enough, but just today I got a bid for almost $1300 ! Wonder what the po’ folks is doin’ these days?

Can it really be that expensive to replace the shock absorbers on a truck?

No, if you install yourself. Talking four or just the back two?

Bilsteins 5100 shocks should cost about $75 to $80. That’s $300 to $320 for 4. I’d think $900 is way too much. I have them on my truck and would not have paid that much.

seems to be on the high side- just bought Bilsteins last year and no where near that high. But is that bid with some else putting them on? if so sounds about right.

Yeah, that’s all four, installed. Just seems like a load of cash.

It really doesn’t look that hard, and I remember doing it 50 years ago. At 72, though, my favorite tool is a checkbook.

I bought my 4 Bilsteins from Amazon and had my tire guys install them for $400 total. Are these guys at least going to kiss you too?!

If you lived nearby, I'd do it for 1/2 what they want. But then, I'm only 66.

The thing is, it is really only an hour to 2-hour project at the most, for a DIY on your back in the driveway. For a shop with a lift by a "pro", figure half that. And, yeah, I like the Bilstein 5100's too.

Did them on my 2001 F350 one time and the shocks were Monroe @ Autozone.....4 shocks plus the steering stabilizer...or 200.00. Took me 1 hour to do. My 08 I put Fox shocks on...less than 100.00 a piece and took me n hhour.

hey, look here....https://www2.4wheelparts.com/b/suspe...lectedTab=true

you are only talking, at the MOST, $300 for all four shocks. buy the shocks and find a mechanic on craigslist. here you go: https://denver.craigslist.org/search...hanic&sort=rel

Bilstein 5100s on Amazon are about 70 bucks each. Locally, labor at an independent garage on pickups is $125/hour

These Bilsteins are great shocks but be advised that they can be pretty harsh riding. I used them on my last truck but since I do use my truck as a daily driver, chose to go with KYB. About the same damping without being a rough ride and are a bit less costly

Installing shocks on a Ford is fairly easy. It took me about 2 hours on my last truck and part of that was because one of the wires holding one compressed broke and it had to be jacked into place. The current truck took just over an hour to install new the shocks

Thanks for the tip on the Bilsteins. I had forgotten that they were fairly rough riding from years ago. Good shocks, but like you I use my truck for other things besides hauling Monty around. I’ll check into some other brands.

Also, regular Rancho HDs, not the junk Ford uses, have a good following on the Ford Truck Enthusiasts site. Like I said above, am using KYB and at about 50K, they are still working well.

I have had Bilsteins on all 4 on my 02 F-250 for 2 years. No experience with other shocks, but I gotta say my truck rides more like a car than it ever did with the stock shocks. If I had to do it again I would get the same shocks. Guess the lifetime warranty means I'm stuck with em anyway.
