TOWING BREAK IN PERIOD
My new 2015 D'max manual says to tow at 50 mpg or less for the first 500 miles. Seriously, is that even possible? How does one avoid a freeway? If I drive at 55 or 60, is that going to harm the truck. I wonder if the engineers who write these manuals actually use the product.
I know many of you have faced this problem. Any advice???

I picked mine up on a Friday and left the following Sunday for a 4000 mile trip with the trailer.I typically keep my speed around 60-65, but no issues thus far and now at about 9000 on the truck and several towing trips later. My truck had about 130 miles on it when I picked it up. Everyone I talked to said no break-in period was necessary. Guess we'll see.

I believe that advise is for people who buy the truck and hook it up to a trailer when it has zero miles on it like Steve says he did. If you've already put miles on the truck with normal driving, I wouldn't be too worried about it. BTW: Many freeways do have minimum speeds of 45mph posted, so 50mph is doable, but I'd try to stick to secondary roads instead if you decide to abide by the suggested break in speed.

Hi
This is a transmission issue.
It does make a difference and the problems created by not complying are seldom seen when you follow the manual. Had a friend with the idea it didn’t make any difference. He had continuing transmission problems until he put a factory rebuilt in at about 150,000 miles and then did the proper break in. he now has 300,000 pulling a cattle trailer and no problem.
We didn’t tow anything for the first 500 miles.

My buddy with the SOB toy hauler who blew his tranny on a trip this summer had a rebuilt one installed. The repair facility told him not to hook up to his heavy fiver until he had 500 miles on that tranny. They didn't seem to care how he drove it the first 500 miles as long as he wasn't towing.

1st 500 = NO TOWING
2nd 500 = Keep it under 55MPH with minimal engine/transmission strain. (per my owners manual)
After that, enjoy!

I drove my truck around the mobile alabama area to log that 500 miles, then I hooked up the montana and drove back roads up to atlanta area keeping it at a max of 55 while varying speed ocassionly. While you may want to hok up and hot foot it down the road...you can just as easily hang out and get in the requirements as stated. John

JMHO, but I follow the manual. Those guidelines and restrictions are there for a reason.

It's your truck... treat it however you think is best. You paid for it.
