Oregon trip

Planning a trip from Sacramento Calif to The Dalles Oregon. Thinking about taking 5 North from Sacramento to Weed then 97 to The Dalles. Anyone taken this route? How is the road and the mountains?
Would it be any better to take 5 to Portland then to The Dalles?
Thanks for any help.

Frank

I have taken this trip many times and live in Bend OR. Sacramento to 97 in Weed straight through to the Dalles is the best route, in my opinion. The road is great and no steep mountains and not a lot of traffic. Grades are gradual this route and pretty straight shot...

Frank and Virginia,
We have taken both these routes a couple of times. I agree with Catcraw on route. It is a relatively easy drive and is a bit more scenic than the I-5 route. Good luck and enjoy. Dennis and Mary Kay

I agree. Just used that route in June and had no trouble with it at all.

I was just on the route in June. I was south bound. You will have a climb once you pass Lake Shasta up to the town of Mt Shasta, with the hill just before Mt Shasta being the longest. You will have a little climb out of Weed then it will level out. There was road work going on in this area when I went through, should be finished up by now. The road south of The Dalles does get a little roller coasty. You will have to past through a few of small towns with speed limits dropping to 25 mph. It is a very nice drive. There are some rv parks along the way, if you would like to stop. I know Bend has a nice one Crown Villa RV Park. A little more pricey but a very nice park. Warning if you decide to stay there, do not follow the GPS directions coming in from the south. It will take you on a road with a bridge to go under that is to low.

We agree!! We also did that drive a couple of years ago. It was beautiful and very easy. There is lots to see along 97. We enjoyed Crater Lake and the Bend area. What started out as a three day stop in Bend at the Crown Villa, turned into a week long stay. Enjoy.

GregN is right about the route to Crown Villa - and the LOW railroad bridge. Just this week a truck pulling a piece of heavy equipment tried to go under and damage his equipment and move the bridge tracks 3 feet. Not sure they have that route opened up yet! There is another very nice park and less expensive - Bend Sisters Garden RV Park. It's a bit out of town - between Bend & Sisters but really beautiful and a view of the Cascades that is wonderful.

That is the correct way to go. I live in The Dalles and often visit a friend in Sacramento and a sister in Petaluma. Given a choice, I fly my plane to Petaluma since my sister is across the street from the airport but it is an easy trip in the Monty too.
