Independant Suspension Size

Morryde has quoted on two I.S. sizes, 7000lbs and 8000 lbs. And of course two prices. We have a 3720 2017 Legacy and are not fulltimers or pack rats. Which size would those with I.S. recommend?

When you go there they will weigh your unit then you can make a choice. They will advise you also. They will not try to up grade you because if you go to 8K and it is not needed the unit will ride rough and they don't want that. I was going with the 7K and when they weighed it I was within 450 pounds of the 7K so I went with the 8K.

From the sound of your post if you presently have 7K axles I would go with the 7K IS.We are long timers and run heavy so although we had 7K axles we went with the 8K is system. The price was not all that much different when we had ours installed.

Note the 8K Is did not change the specs of our Montana but they are a bit more sturdy and we still do not exceed the specs of the Montana. The 8K was to us just a better platform.

Emphasis added... maybe not today, but what about in the future? Have you weighed your rig with your current loading? Perhap you might later change the way you use it... more boondocking perhaps, might need solar and batteries with the attendant weight penalty. Not saying 7K is right or wrong, but Mudchief and richfaa make good cases for themselves for 8K. YMMV as they say. You didn't say much about your budget or level of rig usage... the IS is not a cheap upgrade, better value the more you use the rig... if you get my meaning.

Another thing to remember is the 7K cannot be increased. If your lifestyle changes. The 8K is much stronger and can. The only thing they have to do is change the rubber springs.

Just remember going to a higher rating does not change the rating indicated on the label on the side of the RV. We also understood that the OEM suspension was a very weak link on these things .The OEM suspension failed on our 06 3400 while on the road due to a shackle failure and we went to the IS suspension at that time. We did not hesitate on this 13 3402 Big Sky.We purchased the 13 3402 in May of 13 and had the IS installed at the f all rally Sept of 13.

I would wait till i'm weighed. It only cost 500.00 more to go to 8,000 pounds for both axles so cost is not a big factor with most people. I had mine weighed and Rob recommended the 7,000 pound axles . Dennis is right in that if you are running at maximum or near maximum weight then the 8,000 pound axles would be better but if you run light or average weight then the 7,000 pound axles would maybe be more to your liking as you will ride a little better in most cases with the lighter axles. Dennis is heavily loaded and has a lot of solar and has a 5500 watt generator so he really needed the 8k axles. You don't have to make a decision until after your weighed. If you are going with disc brakes then you will be receiving the 8k rotors regardless of which axle you are going with. Just remember as has been stated, the GVW of the rv is the same no matter which axle you choose as the GVW is set by the manufacture.Good luck and you will enjoy the upgrade no matter what you choose.

My rear axle is within 800# of the 7k limit without adding much in the rear tray storage garage. We were planning on getting the 8k IS in the fall but due to circumstances beyond our control, I'll most likely be adding disc brakes myself. Why not cut yourself some margin right now? You might look back later.....

We're going with the 8K later this fall. With the roads the way they are now and the fact that we are close on the weight it seems like the smart thing to do.

John, Here are actual MoRyde weights while in their facility on 09/24/15 for our 2013 3725 RL: Left Front 3,350. Left Rear 3,050. Right Front 2,725. Right Rear 2,805. We have the side by side washer & dryer in the hallway. We have a similar RV lifestyle as you with 3 months in warmer climates then 1 to 3 months sight seeing travels during summer. Our Montana is always packed for travel similar to the day that MoRyde weighed it. They recommended the 7,000 and that is what we purchased.

This gives you 6075 pounds on the front axle and 5855 pounds on the rear axle. This gives you room to expand if you so choose. This is what i like about Mor-Ryde. They don't try to upgrade you unless you really need it. I also went with 7,000 pound axles per there recommendation even though i told them i would gladly take the 8,000 pound axles if they recommended it. If you went with the 8,000 pound axles and loaded fairly close to the max then your rv would be overloaded. In fact if i loaded my rv to the max per the axles then i would be overloaded. I don't know what each wheel weighs but my axles together weigh 12,720 pounds which if even all the way around which it's not would be 3180 pounds each. I know Mudchief has 8,000 pound axles but his rv weighs at least 1,000 pounds more than mine so he really needs the 8,000 pound axles.Just remember, with the 8,000 pound axles you have a couple of hundred pounds extra just because of the extra weight of the axles. Good choice for what you have.

Does INDEPENDENT suspension solve most tire wear problems? Have replaced both axles in 4 years in 3850Fl. Contine have problems. Always underweight.

I can give our experience. We had the IS our 06 3400 and now on our 13 3402. We had the IS installed within 6 months of purchase on our 13 3402. The tire wear on our G614's
was even all the way across. The tire guy at out tire shop commented on it.

Put over 60,000 miles on our old rig with IS and never had a tire wear issue.

We were within limits for the 7K system but close and since we are long timers and tend to run heavy we went to the 8K system. This was on the 13 3402.We had the 7K system on the 06 3400.
