What are wet bolts?

I've seen discussions about this. I have no idea what these are. Have our first 5er with Mor/Ryde 4000 suspension. Is there something I need to be aware of?????

A quick answer is your spring shackles are greased and they have fittings to do so.

With your MorRyde 4000 the center shear springs are prone to failing ... you don't have a metal equalizer between spring sets like regular trailer leaf springs ... the shear spring takes its place.

This is one of those "a picture is worth a thousand words" statements. I will give the words a try! The wet bolts are the bolts that connect the springs via the shackles to the frame. The "wet" bolts are built with a grease fitting on one end to allow an owner to grease the brass insert in the end of the spring and the frame attachment for the spring. In the past a plastic insert was used in place of the brass insert and it failed after a little towing of the trailer. I replaced the plastic inserts and the thin shackles with the wet bolt kit. The shackle are twice as thick! Having said this--the grease fitting can fail and the "wet bolts" must be replaced. So, I grease mine at least once a year with about 4000 miles of towing per year. Others may have different experiences. Hope this helps. Check the Moryde website for photos of the wet bolt kits and a description

Here is a link to show a wet bolt install and it should help in understanding what they are.

If the grease fittings are not visible on the outside of the shackle look under the camper on the other side of the shackle.

Pulled the MOr Ryde LR-4000 rubber shear brake but had real hard time getting weight off the hanger. Used 12 ton bottle jack under the U-bolts on the axle, had the spring eye almost to the frame but wound up having to sledge and pry bar out the bolt. Spring "sprung" up against frame now. No level up just jacks. I've cribbed up the frame fore and aft just far enough to keep her steady. Wondering how I'm going to get those wet bolts in the shackle bracket through the spring eye with all that tension. I've lifted/lowered that jack several times to find the sweet spot but no joy. Ideas?

Dexter recommends greasing the wet bolts every 3,000 miles, which will prolong their life.

When I replaced one of the shear springs, it was just trial and error finding out how best to take enough pressure off so that I coyld replace that. If there's a secret, I don't know what it is. John

I can tell you what a wet bolt looks like...I just had one fall off of my 2-year old 3400RL with only 6,000 miles on it!
Keystone said in effect "Too bad". Imagine a suspension part falling off a 2-year old car with only 6,000 miles, and the manufacturer saying "Tough". Yet we put up with it from RV manufacturers. Sad...
