My local RV dealer wants $550 for the Progressive Industries 50A unit installed. I see most have it priced between $330 - $400, not all include the monitor inside the RV.
Question is:
Is $550 reasonable installed with the inside monitor?

Depends on how mechanically and electrically inclined you are. I installed ours in about an hour. The indoor remote was easy on our model since the wiring run was already in place from the basement to the coat closet on our model. Our dealer is at $90 and hour labor rate, so it sounds like they are quoting a couple of hours on the install. It does not sound too far out of line, but others may differ (as always!!).

I have been reading all the posts trying to deside which unit to get I think it's down to Progressive Industries 50A. Now HW or portable? If HW has remote readout how do you check prior to plug in ? meter ? or plug in and go in and read the remote.

I have the PI hard wired. It has a 16 second or 2 min and 16 sec delay. The remote shows the status as soon as it is plugged in. It will not activate the relay if there is a fault.
I hope this answers your question.

If there is any question regarding the power supply to the EMS, it will not allow power to feed to the rig. The remote will tell you what the problem is by a code number. The times I have had a fault on the unit (usually ground related), the campground electrician was always called or I moved to another site. On the other side of your argument, if the power is shut down by a portable unit for any reason while you are in the unit, you will have to walk out to the pedestal to read the code. Six of one or a half-dozen of the other, your choice. I personally like being able to look at any time while I am in the rig.

The portable unit has the advantage of no install time, however the hard wired unit has plug in cards in case of failure while the portable does not and must be sent in

Ordered mine from Tweetys today, $350 Plus $34 expedited shipping. My RV dealer came back with an offer to install it for $100, couldn't really budge on their store price of $450.
Pretty nice they'll put it in for me. I am inclined to install this stuff, but unfortunately never seem to have time so this works best for me. Anybody in Western WI, Northpoint RV has my vote!
As an aside ... they also replaced my tires pre-delivery which is pretty sweet.

I have had one for the past 4 years. It still amazes me when RVers ask "What is that?" I tell them but I am sure they don't understand--just waiting for a big wipe of electronics to find out what a surge protector can do. I have a portable 50A unit.

If you're concerned about the money these things cost, think about the cost of replacing all the electrical appliances that are plugged in all the time.

The cost is not the concern because it is a must have thing, only infor that Tweety is not the cheapest.
