K&N Air Filters

I just recieved my K&N air filter suppose to increase HP and MPG also has a lifetime guarantee?? I thought I might be able to install it myself, but after looking at the 32 steps to installation, Ive been intimidated out. Has anyone got one of these and done it or should I just take it in to a good tech.? Need input ........Dave

As a mechanic, Carol calls me the "Master of Disaster" but I had no trouble installing my filter and even taking it out and cleaning is simple. Don't feel intimidated - it is really quite simple and, after the initial installation, it seems easier the next time when you clean it.

I have thought a few time's about doing the install on the K&N filter, but keep going back to the articles I read inregards to the possiblility of it not doing the job and voiding warranties. I know, I have asked several of the Top Mechanics in this area and they have all advised me not to install it for just that reason, it doesn't do the filtering job it is suppose too. However good luck with the extra horse power.

I just got the filter element about two years ago and just the replacement cost has paid for and I feel I did pickup about 1-1.5. So after 40,000 miles I feel I'm ahead

Dave, As others have said on this topic, "Don't be intimidated." I made the change based on a fellow RV'ers recommendation. After the change I found many of my friends running the K&N on their non towing pickups as well as their family passenger cars. All swear by them. Both the change out and subsequent cleanings have been very simple. We realized about a 10% gain in MPG while towing. Not quite as much gain when empty. My truck was older so the warranty issue did not bother me.

I've been running the K&N filter on my '95 Power Stroke since January 2002 with excellent results. Glad I had it installed. It came as part of my Banks Power Pack installation.

I inquired as to why K&N did not make a filter for the 08 Ford Diesel.I have always ued K&N filters on my trucks... They said that the ford filter did as good a job as one they could produce.

I used the K&N filter on our 2005 GMC 3500 D/A, and found the K&N allowed just to much dirt thru and really found no improvement and anyway. I went back to the OEM filter and have found it work better. I also read a very intensive report about the K&N vs other filters and they found the K&N filter didn't do good at all against the OEM filters. I have tried to find the report but haven't found it yet. Good Luck with your choice. GBY...

I was told not to use the K&N filter or any other oil impregnated filter on any of the newer trucks with the DPF filter. It will mess up the emissions.

Return it to the store. Not worth the risk.

My dealer told me any wet filter would void my warranty.

I hate to rain on your parade but I agree with the don't install crowd. Flows more air and dirt. Truck that have sensors in the intake could be fouled. Don't do it.

I haven't had a problem. One thing I have forgotten. Maybe somebody can refresh my memory so I don't have to look it up, how often to I have to clean the filter under "normal" driving conditions?

I agree with that advice. I have been looking for a air filtration/flow test that I saw once but I can't find it. I will check some other forums and if I find it I will post the link.

dieselplace.com (the DuraMax site) is one that did an extensive documented test some time back. I think it is posted as a sticky there. Stock filter was most effective was the result.

I think the problem applies to GM and possibly Ford. I know it works fine on my Dodge, which reminds me I better clean it again. Thanks for the reminder

K & N filters will almost for certain throw a code in a GM Dramax. The stock filter is the only thing I would use.

Nothing scientific here I'm sure, but a relative of mine and I have the identical Duramax NBS 2007.5 and he has installed the K&N filter and I did not. He gets less MPG than I under very similar conditions of driving with or without towing. Not scientific. My Chev dealer mechanic said the GM filter is just fine. Dennis

Under normal driving conditions it should be cleaned every 20,000-25000 miles. I do mine every 25,000 because I feel that my driving conditions are pretty normal. At that, the filter collects a lot of dirt but is not completely dirty. Incidentally, mine was installed as part of the Banks Power Pack installation I had done in January 2002. I've not had any problems. This doesn't mean that others haven't had problems, and I'm assuming that the newer trucks computers will not accept the change to K&N filters. If I had a newer truck and it was out of warranty, I wouldn't hesitate to use a K&N filter in it.
