You are right dsprik. When you think about the "recall" it was a joke. The hardship was on the consumer NOT Dometic. The mod is virtually nothing - just a piece of $1.00 fabricated metal and a tech to fasten it, then it's done. That did NOT cost much. It cost more money to print up the recall and mail it out. Now add up the hours and miles ALL customers had to endure and it's a joke.
How they got away with this is idiotic. Not to fix the root cause of the leakage, but put in a plate so the rig doesn't burn down and call that a recall? This non-fix MAKES them money because they get to sell replacement refrigerators when the real problem occurs. This will go down in the annals of recalls as one of the best corporate moves to protect their profits and still pretend they were helping the public. Just shameful in my opinion.

Dometic got away with it because the NTHSA approved it. I emailed NTHSA almost a year ago concerning the "fix", and my having to haul the unit somewhere to get a five minute make believe fix installed. Being mobile, the RVs fall under the NTHSA, and they are to me a gutless bureaucracy.

Will,
If you replace with an RV model then you will probably replace with a Dometic. They are about the only company that makes them. Even Norcal is owned by Dometic! So one way or the other you end up with the same thing.
You could always install an external latch on an apartment type fridge.
Good luck.

I noticed someone else made that statement the other day. Actually, Norcold is owned by Thetford Corp. here in the good old USA. Not saying they make the fridges here, but it is a US company. Headquartered in Michigan IIRC.

Will,
Thanks for the information. I think I just copied another post thinking they were correct. One of these days I'll actually check stuff before I post! Well maybe!
Thanks again.
