As a truck driver since 1981 I feel that I have enough to worry about with the Montana behind the GMC P/U, AND TRAFFIC.
WOULD NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.

That sounds nice Ozz - sure a long way from the frame to the back isn't it (long back clip).

For some reason I thought you were getting the Mountaineer version that more or less lets you slide back the square bumber (which ours don't have).

As you can see, we do pull a 13' enclosed motorcycle trailer behind our 3295RK. The dealer would not install it themselves, but was going to farm it out. So I took it to the same semi-truck place and they custom built the hitch and installed. We have been fulltiming for over a year now with no problems except for Canada which would not let us pull double and we are now in Oregon with the same predictament. Why do some people say "triple", When you are only pulling two items, to me that is "double". Our total length is 64' and we also have the camera on the back of the Monty. We have pulled in KS,MO,OK,TX,CO,MT,SD,ID,NE,WY & WA. Heading for CA & AZ next. I am considering switching over to one of those SURVS, if I could find one that is suitable for fulltiming and if I can convince the wife to give up the Monty!!! I used to pull a boat behind our Cardinal, but that was just around KS,OK,ARK & MO. I consider myself to be very safety minded.

I'm looking at two extended warranty's for my almost one year Monty and neither will cover if towing another unit. Just an FYI.

I hope everyone considering pulling something behind their Montana knows that IF something should happen, Keystone won't stand behind it, nor will the frame manufacturer. I know that there are a lot of mechanics who will attach hitches to almost anything you bring in. Even though you may have pulled behind your Montana already, it doesn't mean that it will last. I even took my bicycles off the hitch that my dealer installed just so I'd be safe.

IMHO, This thread could go on and on indefinately. I feel the bottom line is this, (warranties aside) if you are not completely comfortable with your own ability, and the safety of all others who may come in close proximity of you and your "train", don't even think about it. I was born and raised on a ranch in central New Mexico. I've been pulling trailers since I was 5 years old (not an exageration). I am completely comfortable, confident, and licensed to pull doubles and triples, but I do not stray outside my comfort zone. Most of you are from, or are in highly populated areas with alot more traffic than the wide open spaces of the Southwest, given this, I can sympathise with your concern, however, some of you condemn this practice without a clue of life out here in the highly unpopulated deserts of the Southwest. OK, so my opinion wasn't so humble, and yes Kenny, double means 2 trailers, triple means 3, combination means TV and 1 trailer.

There are many of us who are licensed to pull doubles. That isn't the problem. The problem lies in the Montana frame. When we had some fiberglass cracks repaired at Keystone two years ago, the first thing they did was to check the frame. The reason: I had a hitch at the back. Fortunately for us, the hitch had carried bicycles only. But from that time on I have not even carried bicycles. They were adamant about frame stress.

I've got two neighbors that just bought new boats this year, and they have been talking about sharing my Montana. Maybe we'll have to do a mini rally this year locally. Not sure if we should call it the Montana Rally or SeaRay Rally.

Good Evening All,

Lonnie, in the states of Texas and New Mexico, triple towing is defined as 1 tow vehicle, hauling 2 trailers - towing with 3 interconnected entities. It is legal in Texas, not in NM. I am not aware that there are any states that will allow the actual "towing" of 3 trailers. I too don't really see the logic in the terminology, and do not even know if it is standard across the country.

But, for what its worth, I too am readying my 3400 to triple tow a 12' covered trailer to haul my Harley. Going down the road, I will be 64' and weight in at about 21900# - just inside the spec for the 2500HD.

There are a number of Internet sites that list in which states it is legal to triple tow (although some have incorrect information). In general, the majority states do - 37 I believe - with many of the coast states not allowing it. Interestingly, Colorado is one of the states where it is legal - even with many of the mountain passes.

Also, for what its worth, I predict that Keystone will get around to offering the Monty with a hitch in the future since many of the competitors currently offer it as an option. Don't forget that the Montana was originally desgined with an 8" I-beam frame which caused numerous frame-flex problems. The newer models are built with 10" re-enforced frames.

My wife loves the 3400. I love my wife - and my Harley. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the clarification Rick, but for what it's worth, I was born, raised, and lived 99% of my life in the state of New Mexico, and have pulled 2 trailers all over it, north, south, east, and west without ever even being questioned by law enforcement. I'm not saying you got false information, just that I've been doing it for years without a problem. Seems to me if it was not legal, I would have been shut down long ago. In Oregon on I 84, I have seen on several occasions UPS trucks pulling 3 trailers, didn't look very safe, even a little uncontrolable, but it was being done.
All that being said and out of the way, what kind of Harley? I've always wanted a Heritage Softail Classic, but could never seem to get it justified with my wife. Got close a couple of years ago, but wound up with Polaris Ranger and Sportsman 500 4 wheeler instead. More family friendly I guess.

I too don't necessarily understand the logic for number of trailers or even length across the states. Truckers have the same issues, but must operate under another set of laws, as I was chatting with 2 UPS drivers towing triples (tractor + 3 trailers) in Colorado a couple of weeks ago. They take advantage of the states they can do it, then drop to another truck when they can't. Must be a complex dispatch system to keep all of that in order.

You are right - I didn't take my rig through NM because of the law, but I was headed out of Albuquerque on business one Friday, and I couldn't count rigs in a stream of triples (or 5er/boat combos) heading out of town, probably going to Elephant Butte Reservoir.
