CB Radios - needed?

Finally broke down and got a Cobra HH (hand held). I have went back and forth for over a year trying to decide on getting one, and if I got one should I go all out and hard wire a regular one in, or get a HH.

I finally decided that the only time I really felt I needed one was those times when traffic stopped for no apparent reason. The case where you are crawling along on the interstate bumper to bumper and it would be good to know at what mile marker the problem is at so you can make a decision on a re-route.

How many out there have a CB? HH or regular size unit hard wired? How do you use them now that cell phones and I-phones are so common?

I sure don't need it to tell me where the troopers are hiding. Number 1: I usually can't speed anyway pulling the Montana, and Number 2: I can generally guess where they are hiding anyway, so who cares.

We also have the Cobra HH in both the truck and the Honda. It is not like the old days with all the chatter and it is hard for us to speed. It is handy in traffic situations and most of the time truckers warn of impending holdups or road construction. I have had a CB before anyone really Knew about the CB bands Late 60's we built our own. Had a license then KGG 7122 and the handle became double duce.

I have traveled with a good CB since the 70's. I rarely talk on it but I always listen. I agree with you about the smokies.....I fear them not as I cannot/will not speed. But I find the CB to be a great asset while traveling. I hear what's going on around me, especially ahead of me. And I have used it a couple times to contact other drivers (trucks and other RVers) when I spot a door open or shifting cargo.
I also travel with a 'police scanner'. I find it especially interesting to listen to the police/fire frequencies. On the PA T-pike for instance, I can hear every police and service vehicle on the turnpike. They have a relay radio system. It's great to know if there is a crash 80 miles ahead.
Is the CB necessary.....no. But I have found it useful enough to invest about $100 in a good basic radio and antenna (a good mag mount will work just fine).

I haven't had a CB for years, but it sounds like a HH might not be a bad investment.

I've had a CB in almost every truck I've owned. Like you, I don't use it for much except traffic reports. It's also nice to have the NOAA weather option. I have a radio for my new truck, just haven't decided for sure how or where I'm going to put it and where I'm going to drill the hole for the antenna cable.

I, like others, have always had a CB on board, since it is influenced by my work. Don't talk much other than in emergencies, but always monitor the truckers for traffic situations.

No CB here. Yea back in the 60-70's but not since then. My wife and I sometimes are in 2 vehicles and use GMRS radios, good for a couple of miles.

I've always had a radio since I do a lot of long distance traveling. In the newer trucks there's not much space for a full size radio so I got one of those Cobras that has everything built into the mike. Not the greatest but works for the times like was said to find out what lane to get in with heavy backups of traffic,

We have had a CB in every vehicle we own- Don't talk on it much but it has proved to be invaluable on numerous occasions to locate a fuel stop, an alternate route due to a road closure or to find out how to best avoid an accident scene- Can't comprehend not having this additional tool- JMHO- Don

I have the Cobra C75 WX ST. Everything is included in the Mic. There is just a small box that has to be mounted behind the dash. It works great in the newer Ford Super Dutys. There is a small compartment on the right side of steering wheel about knee level that can be removed for the Mic wire. I very seldom use it to talk but I do monitor for traffic. I also think it is very useful to have so that if there is something going on with the TT any trucker can notify you. I have an antenna mounted on the drivers side cowl so anyone passing me can see I have a CB. When we were showing horses and traveling all over the country with a 40' gooseneck trailer I had several instances where I was notified via the cb that something was going on with the trailer. I've also used it to get directions or ask where I could fuel with the big rig.

I've had an old Radio Shack TRC-479 for years. Like said I listen to the truckers from time to time for road issues. What we've always used it for the most is talking back and forth while in a group of 3 or 4 traveling to the lakes. We use an off channel say 14 and converse back and forth between us all ... everyone in each TV can listen in ... staying on a little used channel doesn't irritate other CB users. On one lane bridges in Missouri, it comes in handy as the lead vehicle can act as a traffic monitor till all of us get over it.

Ok, this will show how long ago I messed with CB's. What channels do you monitor and what brand of HH would you suggest?

I have one, but monitor it only, and only if there is a traffic problem.

Dick,
Truckers still monitor channel 19 in all the areas that I have travelled. I used to have a Cobra HH, but now have regular sized in the truck, so I can' really make a recommnedation.

I used the HH model. Great for traffic information especially road closures due to accidents. There has been several times when we were alerted to road closures that saved us from sitting on the highway for many hours.

We plan to buy a HH for our trip to Alaska to communicate with our buddies in a small caravan as cell towers could be few and far between. I also would like to know what brand is recommended.
