Another sheared bolt problem.....

this time it was on the front landing gear shaft. We were extending the landing gear when we noticed that the curbside landing gear was not getting longer. The bolt is much shorter than the one in the slide mechanism as anything longer would hit the bottom of the motor when turning. It's a 1/4 inch bolt that is 1 inch long. Might be good to get some spares.

Fortunately this happened in Goshen when we had good neighbors (Bob and Myrna, aka Trebor and Imp) who took Glen to get a replacement bolt.

I'm confused (that's nuttin new), but what 1/4 inch bolt? That one(s) on the cross shaft that goes from one leg to the other or something internal on the leg itself?

Thanx
Bill

I had same problem this summer, but the bolt didn't drop out. Quick trip to the hardware store near Acadia NP, and I have spares now, too.

Great pictures, Ozz. Thanks so much.

Neither Glen or Bob had a bolt short enough so they marked the length on the bolt that they had and headed for the hardware store to stock up. Now we're ready.

Thanx Ozz!

You gotta socket screw? Mine were just 1/4-20 nut and bolt. That will be on the 'to do' (swap out for the gr5 socket) when I retrieve 'the box' come spring. Sure wish mine had that instead of eating the motor shaft.

Yea, I'm still a tad upset (nice word) about the landing gear taking a big lunch break (LOL).

EDIT: on the above. Didn't remember or realize...that is a square shaft is a square tube. How did the bolt let loose without rounding out the tube?

Hmmm, curious minds are at work.

The round rod is inside the square shaft. Don't know if that is the explanation you're looking for....

Just out of curiosity,

Does the shaft also support the load on the right landing gear? or is there more to it (I'm imagining the bolt shearing and the shaft spinning wildly allowing the right leg to drop). Wild imagination .

What is this bolt called, with that recessed head? Is the size 1" long by 1/4"?

Thanks

Ozz, JRGWDENNER,

Oops!

Had a total case of CRS! I realized what was what last night after I went to bed. For some reason I was thinking of the shaft part that goes into the bigger shaft; even with pictures. That's what I get for talking before my brain is totally engaged.

Hey, Bill, you fit right in with the rest of us! When I retired, I think my brain did, too!

Brad, when our bolt sheared, Glen could manually turn the shaft, easily. That's why we were glad that Bob and Myrna were our neighbors because we were still hitched up and couldn't put any weight on the right landing gear without the bolt in place. Bob gave Glen a ride to the hardware store before we took the weight off our truck.

R Kassl, you've got the size correct.

Remembering Dale's (MIMF2) comments about the slide bolts, and how you needed to get them long enough so that the threaded portion was not inside the tubes, because of the inherent weakness caused by cutting the threads; maybe try to find bolts that have a smooth shank? Are they any specal grade? (Bad sentence - but you get the drift I hope)

Glen wasn't able to find any in the needed size that had a smooth shank. The one he took out didn't have a smooth shank either. There probably isn't as much stress on this shaft either.
