I have been using sodium dichlor (don't buy sodium trichlor) for my RV for a number of years. I figured if it can keep the wet, warm conditions of a hot tub safe, it will work in the RV to sanitize. I have read in many places that it is easier on plastics than bleach. It is much, much more convenient to work with too.
I calculated once that 1/3 oz.(2 tsp.) of dichlor will raise the free chlorine in a 56 gal. tank to 20 ppm. That's plenty to sanitize after sitting a few hours.
Typical city water is about 0.5-2.0 ppm of chlorine to keep it safe.
You put it into your fill hose (no messy spilling of bleach) hook up the hose to the fill port, and fill 'er up! Then just pump it through all the pipes.

Great post! When sanitizing with sodium dichlor, does the hot water system need to be by-passed?
