Fun at removing hitch

Since I will be winterizing the Montana on the site here in Georgia, I thought I would remove the hitch from the bed so I'd have more room to haul a few things. I have a Reese 16k slider and it has been in the truck for over four years. I never thought to lube the four pull pins where the hitch attaches to the rails as they don't move. Well, can you say 2 lb. hammer, liquid wrench, and pry bar.

They were corroded in place and a lot of fun to get out. We think to lube the moving parts but not the stationary ones. So a heads up to those of you thinking about removing your hitch from time to time. You might want to add lubing those pins to your maintenance list.

That's interesting. I wonder if there isn't some warping that's put pressure on the lugs that go into your rails. Ours is a Curt, but is also rail mounted and has a small amount of 'wiggle'. Haven't ever thought about lubricating the lugs/rails since I leave the hitch on our Monty pretty regularly.

nosticks, I basically have that same manual slider. I am right at 2 years on the install and have only had it out once but the pins were free and good to go. Good tip though, I will start spraying them and exercising them once and awhile.

Just slightly off the subject, did you take your Reese out in 2 pieces, by taking head off first, then unpinning the rest? I split mine up to take it out but just wondered if I really needed to.

I just pulled mine for the winter and have a couple of times this year to move some things. Pins looked good w/o any rust. Maybe because I have a cover over the bed? I also left the hitch attached to the pin box, pulled the pins from the rails and raised the hitch using the trailer lift system. After I pulled the truck out I put a small work table that I have under the hitch and lowered it back down so it's resting on the table. I have done it that way because I can't lift anything heavy any more. The only challenge is making sure everything lines up when I re-install the hitch.

That is one of the reasons I have a B&W Companion Hitch. No rails in the bed, no pins to rust or pull. Just loosen two U Bolts and lift the hitch out.

Hello, All

Anti-seize to all studs, bolts, nuts. I put it on my lugs on all my vehicles. being a farmer its your best friend in the field or on the road.

I still take mine out in one piece with bedsaver attached. Need a comalong to lift it out. The comalong is attached to a hook in the ceiling and is a bear to get it lifted out. Might try to take head off first to lighten load and balance hitch.

I use an engine hoist. Same principle though.

That would be worth checking. My hitch is covered except when connected to the RV.

I just got a "Hitch Mounted Pickup Truck crane". Maxworks model 70238
Used it to remove my hitch yesterday and it worked very well.
Got a great deal at Sears on-line. right around $170 delivered.
I like that you don't have to permanently attach anything to the truck.

That looks like it weighs about as much as the hitch!
