Campground Cable TV is Changing

We are at a campground in Asheville, NC and they now require campers to use a cable box in order to receive cable channels.

This change is because of a change with charter cable and the FCC. I was informed that this be the future for us who connect to cable tv at campgrounds.

the problems that will be there are:
1. You MUST have access to the back of your television in order to connect the box.
2. You can ONLY connect ONE television to the box.

This will be interesting as more campgrounds go to this FCC requirement.

The park here in Yuma did away with cable also. You have to call up a cable company and subscribe. I like my Traveler anyway. They also charge $12 per month for Sewer and Trash. ($6 ea) They also raised the rent again this year. A lot of people are unhappy and some have pulled out. We are on a special until Jan 1st. We may be out of here then. Most of us never forget we have wheels on the Monty.
We may head toward Texas for new scenery. Joe

I like my Travler as well, I use the on air antenna to get the local news and have not used a cable hookup in quite a while. I would like to see a formal policy of this "new" FCC requirement. I assume the campground charges you for the box as well?

We use our traveler for local channels as well as cable. I still have my length of cable in the rig, but I really don't know why.

I believe satellite tv is much better than any cable service even when we don't have the local stations available. Getting a box (with possibly an extra fee) from the CG office sounds cumbersome. This will not work over the long run for the cable company. Forsyth, GA KOA charges $2 extra if you want to use there cable. I paid the $2 once and the next trip just drove on by.

Residential cable has changed also, at least here in our area. As we remodeled our home (room by room for 25 years), I buried the coax cable behind the walls and used wall outlets. Our most recent remodel was the kitchen, about 2 years ago. We get our TV through the phone company and they were doing an upgrade to the cable boxes. We used to have one Motorola box in the cellar that accepted the coax cable and ran all 3 TVs. Now everything has changed to CAT5 wire and the coax is obsolete. I asked how they were going to replace the coax and their answer was "We don't. We just drill through the floors and walls to run the wire". I WAS NOT A HAPPY HOME OWNER!! So they left the wire and with the help of my son, we did the "behind the wall" installation leaving the coax in place. Now each TV has its own little box with a new main box in the cellar (POWER SUCKERS). I had to put black tape over the little blue light in the bedroom. It drove me nuts. They returned to do the final hookups.

I did quiz the young man who did the final hookup about drilling the walls and floor. He said that they occasionally run into problems like drilling water pipes!!!

This happened to us at a CG in Bayfield, Colorado last Spring. After spending an hour trying to hook up the cable box, I took it back to the office and exchanged the fee for a couple bundles of firewood. I told the guy that I was supposed to be having fun...but this wasn't fun. No TV on that trip but we did have some nice camp fires.

LOL Flymutt... if you can't enjoy a TV show, then burn something. Good job on the box trade for wood. The box probably would have stunk real bad in a fire and the smoke would probably have been more hazardous.

In Flagstaff, AZ this summer, the RV park required a "cable decode" box from their cable provider--$2/day. I think the local cable company scrambled the signal to prevent those who have attempted to get free TV. Also there was no FREE Digital on the air signals. I looked and looked--nada! My satellite dish was useless due to trees. Finally, we have been to Flagstaff several times and I am fed up with the RV park--so it is off my list.

Thanks Bingo, I thought maybe it was something like that. Just hadn't heard it called that. Maybe because we have Dish.

Does this mean the nightly rates are going down? Didn't think so.

No, ours is for Dish. It's just the name for it from Winegard. You do have to order Dish or Direct and unlike the carryout more is involved to switch between the two carriers than just switching a couple of dip switches. On the other hand it's level-up for TV. I just have to push one button and I have HD on both TV's (it finds the satellites itself) and both TV's can watch different satellites at the same time. The only issue is getting past the cost.
