Class A license need

I live in Bakersfield, California. I have been advised by DMV that I need a non-commercial class A license to pull my trailer in California. If your trailer GVWR is over 15,000 you need a the license, if your trailer is 15,000# or less you have to get an endorsement. Most people do not know about this. The CHP commerical division is starting to check these trailers, especially the toy haulers.

This only applies to California residents.

Vehicle and driver licensed in their home state complies with the regulations in their home state.

If California starts trying to apply their regulations on out of state vehicles and drivers that only gives me one more of several reasons I will not go back to California. LOL

This has been discussed many times here. It only applies to CA licensed vehicles so the out-of-state'rs have no worries. Be sure to have a properly licensed driver (CDL or Non-Commercial) with you when you show up for the driving test.

Most time the CHP won't bother you but if you look obviously overweight, do something stupid, or tow your toyhauler with your 1/2 ton truck past Glamis on I-8, you should expect to be stopped.

Thank you for the letting me know to have a licensed driver, CDL or Non-Commercial, with me when I go to test. I did not even think about it. This is really a hassle, but it has to be done so I can hit the road again.

I wouldn't delay any immediate travel due to not having the proper license. The vast majority of CA residents with with 15K lb RVs don't have it (including many of the Montana members here). There is very little chance you will be stopped. But do work on getting the proper license when convenient for you. .

I have a trip planned in March, so I think I have plenty of time to get the proper license. Thank you for your feedback. I think the CHP is paying more attention to the toy haulers, which I do not have. Have a wonderful and safe new year!!
