Mackinac Island

Any suggestions on campgrounds in this area would be appreciated. I wi I will be there the first or second week of October for one week. I am looking for a full hookup site. I will be only 5 weeks out from back srugery, my second in 10 months. I need easy in/easy out. Bike riding of any distance is out but I know they have horse carriage rides available. We would be arriving at Saint Ignace with the thought of crusing the area around upper Michigan and lower Superior including the Locks. I have been in the area but not in the last 25 years. AS we already live in Wi. this is a short trip for us and we should know more about our local areas. I can tell you more about Corpus Christi where we winter for a month each year than my own state once you get over 100 miles from home. Thank you and any help/suggestions will be appreciated. Tim, Try Indian Rivers Campround about 25 miles South of Mackinaw City. http://www.indianrivercampground.com/default.asp. We stayed there two years ago and it was probably one of the top parks we have stayed in. Hugh spacious treed lots in a beautiful setting. Very quiet and the nicest people owned and operated the facility. The drive back to Mackinaw was nothing.

St Ignace is a nice town but most of the goings on are at Mackinaw City. There are more stores, restaurants, attractions in the city.

Just 3 weeks ago we stayed at Mackinaw Mill Creek which is 3 miles south on Route 23. They are right on Lake Huron. You can see the bridge from the beach.

Going down Route 23 and 2 miles before Mackinaw Mill Creek is Tee Pee Campgrond. We didn't stay at Tee Pee but it looked like a nice campground. It is also on Lake Huron.

Knowing then what I know now Tee Pee would be my choice.

Both parks hav shuttles to the ferris for Mackinac Island.

As Glenn said, those two CGs on the south side of the bridge are the best choice. Mill Creek is large and has small 30 amp sites - except for a new addition they just put on - larger sites and I believe 50 amp, but has no view of the Bridge and the Island - which is spectacular.

I camped several times years ago at the Tee Pee, but that was during my softball playing days years ago. I understand they have upgraded nicely since then, but I haven't checked it out. We are so close to MC (1½ hrs) that we generally resort to day trips to the city and the Island.

Also, as Glenn mentioned, the Mackinaw City side of that bridge is where all the action is - times 10. That bridge toll will get expensive camping on the wrong side of it...

Best bet is to camp on the south side and take day trips to the Soo Locks and Taquamenon Falls areas.

That's what we did. Left Mackinaw City early and went straight to the Soo. After a boat tour and a little sight seeing went went to Taquamenon Falls. If you have never been to the falls and your back can with stand a 2 mile walk, round trip, than you gotta go see it. The walk is mostly flat BUT there are a number of stairs to get the best views. It's nearly as beautiful as Niagra but in a wooded setting and few tourists.

If you want to spend some time in Sault Ste Marie Mi. They have a city campground called Aune-osborn. It is right along the St Marys River. All the big ship come right by here. It is neat to sit and watch them. It costs more for the waterfront sights but worth it.

Also another entertainment focus is just north of the Bridge. The Casino. My sister and BIL are up there now and staying in CG near there.

If you are a gamer and plan on that for a focus for your trip there, it may be better staying on that side of the Bridge. Just depends on where you plan on spending the majority of your "entertainment". Stores (galore) and dining (tons) on the south side - also a water park. Gambling/Falls/Locks on the North side.

We were at the Mackanaw mill creek the same time as glenn and it was our 6th time to that park , don't go to tee-pee as its a dirty park as they dump oil on there rds so you track it in the unit , i was there when they dumped ... 1 yr ago stay in the back of the rows 5-6-7-or 8 facing the berm as they are bigger sites like site # 165 or #190 ,, they are 30 amp but bigger and in the most of the fun sailer

Forget to mention its $6.00 to cross the bridge with the unit but well worth it ,, also go to a historal park out of the cg to the left 1 or 2 miles and is state run and is great , the logging days , even for kids ,, its 232 miles from crivitz as we are there for july and aug but now are headed south to fl in 6 weeks ,,, sailer

Unlike others, we were coming from WI and stayed in St. Ignace at Lakeshores RV Park. View of the lake and OK place. Spent our time on the Island...short ferry ride away. Took our bikes and rode all over. Lakeside ride is very flat and 8 miles around. Had lunch, shopped (DW), and ferried back. Been to Mackinac City before, so tried a different venue before heading south. You can't go wrong, regardless.

Chris are you on the way to the rally as we are in traverse city for a week then to mears mi then the rally , if it warms up other wise we are going to skip mears and go to ohio or ind to warm up ,,, then to fl ,,, sailer

Thank you to all that rerplied. We still have not picked out a campground yet but it does look like we will stay on the south side. First I have to get released from lifting no more than 10 lbs. If that happens (on the 26th) we leave on the 27th. Trying to fit one week in before therapy starts, and that dreaded 4 letter word work enters back into the picture. Let's not forget winter around here also. Right now I am more worried about the campground we stay at for 5 weeks every winter in Texas. Pioneer village resort out on Mustang Island, Corpus Christi.
