in bed fuel tank

anyone using an extra fuel tank in the bed of the truck and is it connected directly to the fuel tank or is it a pump? really thinking about adding one to the truck, like 50 gal but dont know much about the pitfalls or issues with them etc.... any advice would be appreciated.

I have a 40 gal tank. It uses gravity to fill my tank. I just pull into a rest area, throw the lever, and let it fill while I drive. After burning the fuel in both tanks, I am done for the day. Gives me an easy 8 hour day.

I have a 40gal tank in the bed of my truck. Mine was gravity feed but I did put on a solenoid and a pump. Be carefully some states do not allow gravity feeds they require a solenoid that will cut off flow in the event of an accident. I do know CA is one but you may want to check your state. I love the exter fuel gives me a much better range and the ability to shop for the best price.

I was going to add a bed tank and wondered about pump/gravity feed. I found a replacement tank that gave me an extra 23 gals (60 total) under the truck. I went this way to save my bed space for generators etc. Just a suggestion if you have not researched this too. I do have a long bed truck.
Safe travels.

This is exactly what we have and what we do!!! Our tank was a custom build to fit below the sight line of the truck box. At a glance no one sees it and we can roll our box cover over it when not towing. This is our second set up like this and had zero issues with the gravity fill design.

the gravity feed sounds good. is there a filter at the bottom before it feeds in to the main tank on these models you are using?

I have a gravity feed 30 gal, not a lot, but takes up only about 8" from the bed of the truck. I can still keep my tool/generator box in front of my hitch with room to spare. This gives me another 300+miles towing and a total of about 600-700 miles towing.

I have a RDS 60 gal in the bed. Truxedo cover hides everything when not towing. Have the manual valve provided by RDS in the side/bottom of the tank. Have the RDS part in the OEM tank fill neck. Do not have any extra filters. No issues. When parked I shut the tank valve, when driving the valve is open. I did not do the tool box combo, did not think the truxedo cover would work and the tool box is only 6" deep, my truck is too tall to reach into it. I use a plastic foot locker that I got @ Acadamy Sports, same height as the tank and I can lift it out of the truck if I need to. Will sit in-front of the hitch and has the normal tool box stuff in it.

I also want to add an aux tank but I'm trying to decide which way to go. I have a 2012 Chevy 3500HD dually. I like the idea of replacing my OEM factory tank and keeping my bed clear. Transfer Flow makes an OEM 61 gal tank for around $1200.00. To me it is not worth paying $1200.00 just for an extra 25 gals. For the same price they have a 50 gal and 75 gal in bed tank system. I have a bakFlip hard cover and the 75 gal tank is too tall for the cover. I like the 50 gal tank but it would be a PITA having to flip open the cover everytime to refuel. I wish they would come out with an in bed tank where the filler neck could be mounted on the side of the bed just below the bed rail above the oem fuel filler.

I've considered this too, but honestly, by time my truck is on it's last quarter tank of diesel, I'm ready to stop, stretch, grab a drink, and a fuel stop serves those purposes well. Maybe I'm just not as "hard-core over the road" driver as some of you.

I have the Transfer Flow 75 gallon tank. It sticks up just enough to have problems putting on a cover. It has a pump that fills the main tank when it gets to 1/4. The biggest problem with such a large tank is when full it adds a lot of weight and puts my Silverado 2500 over the weight limit. No problem if I stay out of California. If I did it over again I would get a smaller tank with a toolbox.

We have an auxiliary fuel tank mounted on the bed of our truck with a toolbox attached and the generator box behind it. The tank is a 96-gallon Transfer Flow with a pump. The tank is a big help on long trips because the cost of fuel can fluctuate as much as 75 cents a gallon. When we took our trip to Baton Rouge LA we saved a considerable amount on fuel.

I have a 50 gallon tank in the back. I was told that Ford required the pump so mine has one. I wired it to the upfitter switches my truck came with a and I just flip the switch ON to transfer fuel and OFF to stop.

I have the 37 gallon Transfer Flow with the TRAX computer system. It was designed to fit under the Pace Arrow roll-up cover and it does nicely. I can lock the cover and it hides/secures the tank.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this system. It is as if I have one 63 gallon tank. I just keep them filled (or not) and the computer, which is tied into the truck fuel gauge, keeps track of how much is in each tank. If the truck gauge reads one-half, then each tank is at half. There is a digital readout mounted inside that tell if the system is working properly and the number of gallons in each tank and the total in both tanks. There is a pump and a filter on the line from the tank to the truck. It ties in at the filler neck for the truck. The only problem that I have had is that I over filled it once and it took the system a while to get itself corrected.

so it sounds to me with the responses that a gravity feed will be the most reasonable priced way to go. was just concerned that with the extra tank in the open mode that it might over fill the main tank and end up on the road but I am not hearing that. so new tires, tpms system and 37+ gal fuel tank. RVing is cheap!!! LOL

The RDS tank feeds into a fitting that goes into the OEM tank fill neck. That part has a "float valve" in it and when the OEM tank fills when parked it shuts off the gravity flow from the in-bed tank.

However, I did leave mine open while parked for quite a while, the issue was when there was a large temp increase, I got a overflow from the OEM tank vent line. Now I just leave the in-bed tank valve closed when parked.

Once funds become available, I plan on replacing the 25 gal OEM fuel tank on my 2012 F250 with a Titan super series model 7020211 50 gal tank. That should get me around 400 miles. I won't have to worry about the extra weight of the fuel tank in the bed and the cargo space it will take up. Also, I figure around 400 miles and I'll be done for the day anyway.
