2nd Air conditioning

I am thinking of installing a second air conditioner in bedroom of 3400 rl. the electrical is there and setup for another unit.

The question is, should i get a ducted or non ducted unit? Should i connect to existing duct with current ac?

Any advice appreciated.

I would get the ducted unit. That way you can cool the living area during the day from the BR and not put up with the noise. The opposite at night.

I added a second unit, It can set up for either duct or not. I didn't connect it, when I want it to cool the lower section all I need to do is open only the vent pointing down the stairs.
But then I'm very frugal and don't need the second unit very often

Where we camp we use the second unit daily. Ours were installed at the factory and both share the same ductwork giving us all the options listed above and a whole lot more.

We have our first unit where both ACs are ducted and tied to a single thermostat. Thumbs up.

Remember that the ducted A/C has a damper on the case that allows you to force the air down or into the duct. So the ducted unit can work either way.

And sometimes if you have to use a CG that is right on top of a noisy interstate you may want that damper and air conditioner noise at night so you can sleep.

Another vote for the Ducted AC, gives you more options. Another benefit, even if you don't need the AC you can always just run the fan/fans to create white noise to help coverup outside noise.

I a little confused my 2014 331RLT didn't come with a second AC in the bedroom but there is a prep for it. because we live in Florida full time I asked what type of air conditioner I would need and the dealer ship said that I would need a unit that was self contained and had its own vents in it like the ones in entry level campers. The first thing I would like to know is how do I find out if the second air can be attached to the existing duct? can I remove the vent trim and it would show me? or something else, and can I use a bigger air than what they said I can use at 13500BTU to the 15000 BTU or is there really a big difference between the two?

We added a bedroom A/C to our 3400RL and opted for the non ducted. If we needed it to help with, or blow in, the living area I set a fan on the top of the steps.

EagleBack, I have a Mountaineer also and I think the second unit is as the dealer told you, a stand alone unit. It is not tied into the duct system. We use ours to cool the bedroom and usually turn it off when we hit the sack. I think mine is the 13,500 BTU and it was installed at the factory.

That sounds good I'm going to remove the roof vent trim and see what is behind it all and see if it is that way or not. I have been told lots of things by the dealers and found there answers to be 50/50 on a lot of things but ether way when the hot comes back next summer I will more than likely look in to an extra unit. also my Montana has a dometic the same as my last SOB but my first SOB had a coleman air and I found that unit was a little better made than the dometic unit as to mainly vibration the one I have in my 331 vibrates just like the one in my SOB and I would really like to be able to eliminate it has any body had vibration problems with there air units as to it makes the whole camper shake?

Another question on this subject. The 3400 rl came with factory prep for second ac, does this mean they also ran cable for thermostat? Or is this just for the power?

Rspradling, you don't say what year your 3400 is. If you have the old style analog thermostat, you will have to replace the circuit board inside the new AC unit.

If you have the new digital Thermostat your good to go.

It is a 2005. I think it is analog.

We are going to try one modification before we opt for a second AC. We are going to replace the ceiling vents with those that can be opened or closed to redirect air where needed. At the same time we are going to cut down the part that extends into the duct work. Some of these vents will block cool air from flowing to the far reaches of the coach.

I do not think the 2005 models came equipped with the ductwork to the bedroom location for the second air conditioner. When we added the second air conditioner to our 2007 3400RL, the only one that would work was the non-ducted unit. I may be wrong, but it will definitely need checked.

On my '07 3400RL, no ductwork and no thermostat, just the controls on the unit.
BTW, if you want to change that old thermostat in the rear with a new one, it is quite a job.
