Loose Fender Screws?

On our previous rig (3750) and the new rig (3850), we have experienced the common malady of the screws that hold the fenders on constantly working loose. We have already lost one on the new rig, so I have been pondering how to remedy this situation, and I think I have finally stumbled upon the solution. The nuts and bolts aisle at Lowes has specialty items that are typically found in large cabinets with pull-out drawers. One of these drawers contains automotive style flat square speed nuts (spring nuts) that seem to be the ideal solution. I bought a few packs and spent about ten minutes putting them on the back of the fender screws. The results could be felt instantly. since you can actually feel the resistance when the screws are tightened. I think this will be a long-lasting fix, but time will tell. Here is a pic of the type fastener that I used:

Quick and easy fix Bingo, thanks for sharing. I used small pieces of wood inside, but those nuts look like they won't come loose.

I use the same auto flat screws. I had a couple of screws loose and this appear to be the ticket.

As I lose the screws I have been replacing them with bolts, lock washers and nuts.
Does anyone see a problem with this ?
Thanks

No problem Joe! Many have done just as you. With the Big Sky, though (at least ours), the fender screws appear to have been painted as part of the full body paint. With the tightening that I did, I can tell the difference as the centers of some of the screws are now metallic versus the black. I will be dabbing some touch-up paint on the screws that are not fully black and hope that is the last maintenance they will need.

NO WAY can I pass this one up.

Interesting timing on your post Bingo...
I just had to replace a missing fender screw. I had to paint the head since I couldn't find any that were already painted. I like the idea of the spring nuts. Gonna get me some!

Yup, that's another one of why didn't I think of that. Have used them for similar things for years and it never occurred to me to use them here. Thanks Bingo!

Coming back from last trip I noticed the fenders flapping a little too much. I went with bolts and Nyloc nuts. All of my screws were loose and two were stripped. Spray painted the heads white with appliance epoxy before replacing. Yea, I too have a few screws loose.

Mike. A lot of people wonder why we jump from perfectly good airplanes. So having a loose screw or two is the norm.

I put a dab of RTV sealant(orange) on the inside of protruding screw, do all in 1 minute, never had one come loose or lost one. Simple and easy

Bingo, those are exactly what I used 3 or 4 years ago on screws. Why I did not post the same original post you did.......I don't have a clue?

Hmmmm gonna have to check into this fix, right now I just carry a screw driver in the cab and when traveling I go around and check them from time to time. Amazing how quick they loosen.

Same here. Lost all of them over time on our 063400 and two on our first trip with the 13 3402. Just another one of those "minor" problems. Replaced all of them with Bingo's fix.
